Inside 500 yards I'd take .308

 

By saturday all of my uppers and rifles should have some type of optic.
Ordered a Holosun red dot for my 7.5" SBR, the cheap red dot currently on that will go to either my 16" or 11.5" uppers.
The vortex scope that I ordered for my .308 will be arriving tuesday so the nikon that is currently on it will be going on my 16" 6.8 SPC upper, and the MBUS currently on that upper will go to the upper that doesnt get the red dot.

 

You should stick with a better all-around cartridge if you don't have many long guns. 308 or 30-06 would be a better choice. Both can reach out and touch something well beyond 500 yards with some practice, while still carrying plenty of energy. They'll both take pretty much any game you're likely to find in North America, they're both cheaper to shoot than a 300 Win Mag (so you'll be able to practice more), ammo is more plentiful, and they're both considerably easier on your shoulder.

You're also more likely to develop a flinch by shooting 300 mag vs a lighter caliber if you're not an avid rifle shooter.

 

Picked up a Vortex Sparc II red dot yesterday. Haven't got to use it a the range yet, but I like it so far.

 

@outdoorAZ if it's your first long rifle then yes look at getting a 308 or even a 556, you'll learn a crapton about reading wind shooting at longer distances.

The 3Win will beat you up is a bit of a misnomer,.. it all depends how it's setup.
As a light weight field/mountain hunting rifle, sure enough it's not gonna be pleasant.

As a precision rifle with a heavier barrel, precision optic, stock, etc adds weight, that will help dissipate the recoil.
I'd shoot this here all day, but it will cost more to feed than the 308 or 556

Thanks for the advice guys. It sounds like I should just buy a scope for my AR15 and start shooting further with that for now.

I shoot plenty of 12guage so I'm not too worried about developing a flinch.

I just had the opportunity to trade for that rifle and I wasn't really sure if I should or not.

 

Anyone shoot a Glock 17"M" ? Thoughts? Why the change of rifling ?

 

Haven't shot one and I rarely shoot glocks, hell I haven't even seen the new glock except in pictures.
I believe the change in rifling was to be able to safely shoot cast lead bullets, I have also heard one person say that another reason for the rifling change was it would make it easier to identify individual weapons with ballistics matching, no clue on how true that statement is.

FYI, the new 17 M is being recalled by police department, this is a direct quote from that write up

Unfortunately, this is the only thing I have heard about the new 17 M

took this thing out to get it zero-ed

range here only goes out to 100 yards so I had to zero to that but goddamn this thing's awesome to shoot. got overlapping groups out of it


had to set up a few stall away from other people because of how brutal the muzzle brake handles the boom though

 

Mounted my vortex today, very happy with it, definitely the best optic I've used yet.
Got it mounted up and then took it outside a little to look through it about a half hour after sunset, on the highest magnification I could clearly see a speed limit sign ~175 yards away.

 

I've got a vortex strikefire 3x on an AR and a crossfire on a .22lr. Wouldn't hesitate to put another vortex on any sort of rifle, they have been nothing but great in my experience and have an outstanding warranty which I hope to never have to use.

 

I'm happy with my Vortex PST, recently moved it to my DMR, one thing to keep an eye on though is the windage knob. Mine has this strange habit of self adjusting, 1/2-1mil of incorrect wind at 600yd will make for an unpleasant day.

But how are these sopes out to 1000 yards/1500 yards. The fellow made the statement about being able to see the speed sign at 175 yards. In my experience, basically any scope will do THAT!
I'm not saying anything bad about Vortex scopes, but how are they out at far far distances ?
