Hello Tacoma World friends. I have a question that I am hoping that someone can help me with.

I am collecting parts to convert my 2001 4cyl sr5 Prerunner 2wd to a 4x4. So far I bought the front differential/axel, both knuckles with manual locking hubs, and a 4x4 automatic transmission. I am looking for the correct transfer case for my automatic trans. I know that I need the j-shift with 2-hi, 2-low, 4-low and neutral gears but I want to make sure that I get the right one. Are the ones from a manual transmission interchangeable? Can I use one from a v6 4Runner? Is there a specific part number that I can use to find the correct tcase? Please help! Thank you!

Yes! I used a auto tranny in my manual.

You'll want to look for a transfer case without an actuator on it. If there's no actuator that means it's the J shift type you're looking for. One from a 4 runner will work.

To be honest, I can't remember if the 4 cyl and 6 cyl transmissions have the same spline count on the output shaft. I know the info is out there though. Just browse some google info and you'll be able to come up with it.

Thanks guys. Just did a lil research and the 2.7 4cyl has the 26 spline count and the automatic 4x4 trans came with the forward shift transfer case. The 3.4 6cyl has a 23 spline count with a top shift tcase.

    Thanks!!

I guess you have your reasons for buying parts a few at a time.

So much easier to have the complete donor vehicle right there.

So many little things you will find missing as you go.

As long as you have no pressure and lots of time.

Me too. Price depends on where I draw the line. Use stock wheels"I don't want too" should be 4200 to 4500 depending on tires. Add 1 or 2 k with new wheels. Another 1200 to 2000 if bumper is added. And so on and so on.
Finish price is probably something that will never be reached.
    List so far
Sway a way 2.5 front coil overs and 2 rear shocks
    Camburg upper control arms
    Toytec 2.5 lift rear coils
All new adjustable rear control arms
    Diff drop
    Shock rebuils kits
    Sway bar relocate. $2750
    And one bad ass 05 4runner. $5900
With any luck it will arrive on Friday and be installed by Monday, but more likely the next weekend though
