    hey guys,

Sorry for the terrible thread title. But I'm really close to purchasing my first truck and I've always wanted a taco. Anyway, when I went to the dealer the price on the 4x2 trd sport and the 4x2 or are the same. I originally was going to go with the trd sport because I liked the painted side fenders/rear bumper/etc. but wanted to explore the or option before deciding.

Do you all think that the locking rear diff on a 4x2 is even worth much over the sport? Or is it mainly useful on the 4x4?

I realized on oahu for me, I will rarely/if ever go offroading to kaena point or somewhere deep in the sand. So probably 98% on the road and 2% offroad. Shocks/tires/etc can all be changed out easily to what the or has, but changing a rear diff is a little much for me. So my main concern is whether it really is worth giving up all the amenities the sport has for the or locking rear diff?

    thanks a bunch

It all depends on your particular use. You'd be really surprised where some good tires and a locking diff will take you off road.

I could very well be mistaken, but I though the elocker only came on the TRD OR 4x4. I think the 4x2 only offers the LSD.

EDIT: Just pulled this off of Toyota's build a truck website. This is for 2017, but I assume it is the same for 2016.

    Good info.
I am debating between the 2017 4x4 SR5 or 2017 2wd TRD sport. Not a big differences in price.
I don't do off-road. Chances are I might never use 4x4. But if I need to sell later, I think the 4x4 will be easier to sell.

Get on Kelly Blue Book and look at the resale differences between a 4x2 and a 4x4 that's five years old. (I think you'll see it's grossly in favor of the 4x4.)

True the 4x4 will hold more value in the end, but I don't plan on selling the truck for a long time. That and I have ruled out the 4x4 as way more than what I need. So by the time I'm ready to sell, it won't matter what it's worth.

Honestly I would value the 4x4 over the "fancy" tech features of the sport. But thats me, and i like to offroad and travel places with my truck.

If you never go off road and never need 4x4, then you really just don't need it. But, if there ARE places to offroad around you and you want to play in the sand, you might find that you actually do want 4x4 after you get the truck and hang out here for a while.
