It's definitely do-able. You'll need a line out converter to convert the speaker signals (high level) from the headunit to RCA signals (low level) for the amp. Then it's just a matter of finding a place to put said amp and subwoofer then wiring everything up. Most common place is behind the rear seats.

An audio shop will know how to do it no problem... I'd even wager best buy could do it for you lol but I don't recommend that. Find a nice shop or do it yourself.

Would I just have to splice into the the existing wires in order to get the signals to the subwoofer? I'm wanting to avoid spending $600 at an audio place

Exactly. I don't think the non JBL has a subwoofer at all so I would probably splice into the rear speaker wires. You'll need to get the positive and negative and connect those to your LOC. Then hook up the rca wires on the other side of the line out converter into your amp. Then connect the sub to the amp and also connect the amp to the battery. Should work at that point.

Edit: remembered one other thing. You'll need to set up a way for the car to tell the amp when it's on. A lot of LOCs have a built in feature for this...just wire it up properly and it'll turn on the amp when you crank the car. If you go with an LOC that does not have that feature there are other ways.
