I sent the video and a message asking about the TSB and a link to this thread to the service manager at my local Toyota branch. This is what I got back.

"Hello Austin…I had a chance to speak to my shop foreman who is very familiar with your concerns , the lower control arm TSB does not apply to 17’s and Toyota is currently researching the drive line issue you hare having “whining noise” at lower speeds .You are more than welcome to bring it in to confirm what we are speculating about your conerns."

Sounds like they have an idea of what it may be.

So the 16's have it at higher speeds and now the 17's have it at lower speeds?

Infrequent poster checking in. I have a 2016 DCLB TRD Offroad. Howling is most noticeable at 54mph, but does it to some degree between 50 and 60mph. Only when lightly hitting the gas. Very easy to start it and stop it. I have an appointment on Sept 2 to get my 10k service and get the transmission ECM flash. I asked about the howl on the phone and he said he'd look into it.

Took a video of mine today on the ride home, this was at 59 mph, although it will do it above that as well. Even though my phone seems to pick up the outside noise a lot more, you can still hear it. I set up an appointment tuesday to take it in...

They are really nice and look factory. You can only tell they are covers when you fold up the bottom of the rear seats. But I got the perforated leather ones, so the outside parts (non perforated) are vinyl while the middle perforated part is leather. The vinyl is so nice that I would actually reconsider buying the full, less expensive, PVC set that isn't perforated if I were to do it all over again. I overlooked the fact that the perforated part could still technically let liquid down through to the original seat. So if, say, you are giving a Toyota fanboy a ride and he spills his koolaid all over your backseat it might get down through to the original seat. There is a thin foam pad under the cover so it might soak some of it up, but I'm hesitant on the actual liquid protection. Plus the covers fit like a glove, they aren't something I want to take off and put back on again to clean. Most people in the Clazzio thread buy the ones I got, maybe someone in there has spilled something and has experience with it.

Anyways, now I'll stay on topic.

Good video aero90....that's definitely the sound. Mine has never been that loud but certainly is the same sound. In my case the dealer let the Toyota rep evaluate it and he was familiar with the issue. They documented the issue for the truck making it official and the Toyota Rep passed on that Toyota was "investigating" it. I just plan on staying in contact with my dealer about it. I'm at 4500 miles and hope they have a fix by the time I reach 10K.

Here's something strange for you guys.......at 4200 miles I took my truck in for the 5k service and identified the rearend whine. The dealer acknowledged the whine and it was documented for Toyota but nothing was done at this point due to it being under investigation by Toyota.

But....Tonight I'm driving down the road doing about 59-60 and I don't hear the whine?? So I turn down the radio and try to make it whine and it is barely there....I had to strain to hear it....it's so low that it'd be hard for me to convince someone that something was wrong??

Anyone out there experience a decrease in the amount of whine?

It's still present and noticeable at 30mph.....but it was a nice drive home tonight without the background whine I've come to accept for now.

Mine does not howl below 55 mph or so, only 55 mph and above. As it goes above 55 mph the pitch changes as well and goes away when off the throttle. Just a classic differential setup issue.

Are your Lower Control Arm (LCA) holes plugged (at positions noted in the TSB for that)? That may be the reason for your lower speed howl. Then at the upper range yours may just be starting to develop the howl from the differential, it definitely gets louder as more miles are put on the truck.

Had my rear diff replaced today. Drove home in peace and quiet. I did not realize how loud it had gotten....man it was crazy loud. Paperwork says rear pinion bearing was bad. I asked tech if any of the parts in the diff were upgrades from Toyota. He said no, there was no succession part numbering on any of it.
