Just wondering if anyone has had an accident in their Quicksand Tacoma and had to get it painted? Or even know how to acquire it?

I was recently side swiped with minor damage but it had scratches down to the steel so they had to respray both passenger doors and fender flares. The body shop I am going to is highly rep'd but they are stating they can't get the Toyota paint. They have had my truck for almost a month trying to match when today they said they had it but I rejected it as it was too light.

So right now they are going to spray the whole passenger side of it the truck and blend it into the rest of the truck. Now I'm not impartial to this but I know its going to annoy the shit out of me.

Yeah, maybe find a Toyota shop, or who your dealer uses for repairs. That mismatch would drive me nuts too.

I had a customer's quicksand '16 come in my shop that had had the bedside painted, it too was noticeable off when you stood back about 10 feet and looked between the bed and cab, or bed and tailgate. Looks like it's a tough color to nail down!

What is happening is that the color code does not come up in their computer because it's a new color and is not in the system yet. I've had that happen before. A good painter can make that happen and mix and tint a color to match. A lot of painters don't do that because they don't get paid for it and just go with what's "close enough" and blend it. I personally go an extra mile on tacoma's... just saying.:headbang:

I'm just wanting to know what color sealer and primer Toyota uses under the Quicksand? I'm planning on spraying a Sport hood for my OR when I get one. Anybody know??

Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
Shops seem to have trouble with Pyrite color too. Even the bottle of touchup that I got from the dealer doesn't really match.

Most likely a gray sealer needs to be applied before color and clear. No need for primer if there isn't any body repair. Also a lot depends on what paint manufactuer your using. All systems are similar, bot can be different.

Because touch up bottles is mixed in a two oz bottle, some colors need to be mixed in a larger quantity for all the tints to show up. I've mixed some colors that require up to 10 oz for a descent color match.

I spray Sikkens on a daily basis and we have Gray and Transparent sealer. I too was leaning toward laying down the Gray sealer but I was wondering about the primer color just in case I get a good deal on a damaged hood.

Isn't Pyrite a metallic? Metallic paints and dealer touch up bottles are never good combos.

Good to know there's other painters on here, I've gone from DuPont, spies-hecker, and now PPG envirobase. How's Sikkens treating you nowadays?

I enjoy spraying their paint. The Lesonal SB base coat paints can be a pain sometimes if you don't baby them. It tends to lift even after laying down your sealer but other than that I have no complaints

I called around and the toyota dealers sub out all their work to shops who have a bad rep. Called 2 and they said they would have to try and come up with the paint color as they don't have it either.
Seems like thats what everyone is saying. Really don't want to have it all sprayed down again at a later date coming out of my pocket.
These guys have worked on my vehicles before and done an awesome job paint matching. Just the shades that occur after they apply the clear coat seem to get darker or lighter. At least thats what they are claiming. Blending was a last resort after I pointed it out. They have tried several times from what I have seen keeping up with the progress. They are also using a non water based paint on the truck. Forgot the name of it. Not oil based but something else.

Was really hoping someone had some luck so I could have them call that shop and figure out what they did right.

Laid this paint down this evening on a ambulance. It reminds me of Quicksand. The booth lights in the picture make it look slightly off but in person and on a spray out panel it is darn close lol

My family owns a body shop...if the colors are so new and haven't been put into the database we just go straight to the paint company and they get everything necessary from the manufacture and we just adjust the shade of the paint ourself. Most people don't realize that you can sit two identical cars from the same company side by side and the shades be different. Like we have a f250 with the maroon tri coat and a mustang in the same color but the shades weren't even close. But, depending on where the damage is they should only have to blend the adjacent panel.
