So I have a leer 100xl and the hatch has only ever opened to just about roof height. In the cold pa winters it is only about 3/4 of that. I complained to the leer dealer who told me it was normal. Given that the 100 is only cab height I wack my head on that thing all the time

I have been looking at longer struts and the ones that are longer on open, are also longer when they close, which means I would have to move the mounts which seems to defeat the purpose of longer struts

It would be great if I could make it open higher

I have the 100xq and it has the same issue. One of the 2 things I don't like about the cap, the other being that it leaks. LEER said that there is nothing to do about either issue. As for longer struts, before you spend money and time, open it and look at the hinges. You will notice that the hinges are about maxed out if yours used the same hinges as the 100xq. I am going to try to design a new hinge one day, but not anytime soon.

On my Leer, the strut part attached to the cap itself, not the window, is at a much different angle, it is attached at the bottom right at bed height, much better angle to open all the way...cold weather really saps the pushing power out of the struts...

What you can do is measure the length of your struts, then purchase a new set with more 'pushing power', then it will open all the way. Ebay is loaded with strut choices...

I have gashed myself more than a few times when my struts got weak, got new struts, haven't nailed my head since...[IMG]

My neighbor has a leer cap and the stirs are opposite of mine, they are low on the cap, and high on the window. That thing opens sky high and is great

My cap jas the frameless window so I wonder if it's a leverage problem? Maybe if the struts were opposite i would risk breaking the window

The other issue is probably the same you describe, the hinge where it attaches to the cap has a lot of flex to it. Makes me think if I use a heavier strut it will fatigue, probably not the metal but where it screws to the fiberglass

Leer told me the same thing. That's how it's designed

Unfortunately some of the Leer models seem to only open that far , I don't have that issue on my 100RCC

That's what mine looks like, they are generally rated @28lbs per side, if you get a 35# or 40# it will help, I am confident the hinge mounts can take the stress from personal experience..

I'm not sure the geometry of the way the hinge and strut are mounted would allow for the OP's lid to open further

2 year old thread.....Did you ever try it OP? I'm going to give it a go on my 100XQ. The corner is perfectly eye level for me, so raising it even a few inches would be nice.

Mission accomplished. I just replaced the struts (took all of 2 minutes & $25 from Amazon). The new ones are about 1 & 1/2 inches longer & 35 # vs. the original 28#. It worked great. The hatch now opens about 3-4 inches higher. Perfect for me & my wife. The hinge allows it with no problem. $25 well spent. :)IMG_0259.jpg IMG_0265.jpg

hey guys my 2 cents. looks like you solved the prob w longer struts,i work building yachts and we use them to hold up berth tops. there are alot of different lenghts and #'s. as far as a leaking cap goes, there is a bunch of ways it can get in. i just got a snugtop installed. i leaks from under toyotas bed rails at car wash blower. the windows are a source sometimes. windoors almost always. the biggest hurdle is the back end. i use a tailgate seal, it helps, ruubber w/3m tape. i camp alot w/ mine so as long as it doesnt leak in the rain i'm ok w/it. i've had leers, a.r.e. and now a snugtop. trying to make it car wash dry is almost impossible. my wife says its not a leak, its an adventure. good luck, i just bought a tube of blk silcone, here we go. haha

I've got the exact same camper top (color too) and was wondering what the model number is for the struts you got? Mine are currently the 28lb suspa c16-08941 and are very worn out. I have always hated how my camper door opens to exactly eyeball level. I measured the distance closed from ball to ball and it's right at 10.5 inches so I can't figure out which model would fit and extend further. Thanks!

Just wanted to throw out an update:

The set I ordered in January still feels excellent and opens the rear window to it's full extension. Initially they were pretty darn tight from the increased pressure and almost threw my hand out of the way when I would turn the latch on my cap's rear window. They settled down after a few weeks and have stayed consistently firm on opening/closing. I measured before and after and the suspa C1602648 set opens the rear window 3.5 inches higher. Doesn't sound like much, but when leaning in toward the tailgate the window corner went from eyeball level to barely touching the top of my head.

I really think anyone who has a 100xq or 100xr should consider getting these things.

Anyone have updates on their replacements? Amazon reviews seem to indicate customers have been pleased at first but reporting multiple failures ~6 months in. Looking to replace a pair for my Leer XL.
