yea hunting over water in 19a is not going to be very productive right now.

Yeah when I was up there it was pretty wet. I was pretty overwhelmed when I got there. A lot more heavy vegetation than I thought. Might be tough scouting the water hole since there has been so much rain.

If it dries out a bunch between now and the rifle hunts you'll be ok concentrating on water but don't solely rely on it. Food and cover are equally important, if not more.

True! This weekend I should definitely have a better idea of what I'm doing up there.

The bears we saw (over in NM) were bedding down by 10am. We were at 6500 feet so by 10 it was barely peeking 80 degrees but the sun was brutal. The bear I ended up shooting would feed slow under the shade of trees but as soon as the sun hit him he would almost jog to the next patch of shade. Like AZ2013 is right on the money with food and cover.

That would be awesome! How do I even go about drawing for a deer tag? Is it too late to try to draw now?

Too late for the draw for this year. The deer and elk application deadline is in June. 2nd or 3rd Tuesday in June but I can't remember which.

The next draw period coming up with be for the Spring 2017 hunts. Javelina, Bear and Turkey. That deadline is mid October.

OTC tags never sell out, however you can only buy one per species and not all species have OTC tags available.

Anyone have any experience in Unit 1? Got drawn for my first turkey out there and will be going on a scouting trip this weekend. Have a couple areas mapped out (greens peak & big lake) but could use any help/info on the unit that I can get.

I've whacked a couple gobblers out of 1, known many people to have done the same. Is this your first turkey hunt or do you have all your gear and know what you're doing? Not meaning to offend, just wanted to make sure i don't send you into spots where a beginner wouldn't want to go..

No offense taken. I'm new to turkey hunting, and still gathering some gear for this hunt. Grew up hunting mostly whitetail, duck, and pheasant in Michigan. Haven't done much hunting since I've moved here to AZ about 6 years ago (besides some yote hunting) and am starting to get back into it. No stranger to long hikes, and have 4x4 so wouldn't be afraid to get into the thick of it.

Make sure you get yourself an owl call! It's key in my opinion. The areas you got listed would be good places to start... Check Pole Knoll and Mexican Hay Lake. Also check out the black river areas, but look out for bears!

Was up in Unit 1 this past weekend and there was a BUNCH of guys running dogs trying to fill the black bear quota. Almost sealed the deal on a nice 3 point buck on sunday morning but didn't get in close enough to make an ethical shot.

Was great. Saw a bunch of game up there despite the rainy weather the majority of saturday. Heading back up this labor day weekend in hopes of at least filling this archery deer tag.

    Happy hunting and shoot straight!

Best of luck out there! Shame you can't sit that private ranch by the million dollar shitter off the 60 just outside of town.. Seen deer in that pasture everytime I go by there.
