A HondaJet at ATL today. Unique way to mount the engines.

...^^^... I am not an aeronautical engineer, but I am not a fan of that type of engine mount. It looks like unnecessary weight & stresses on the wings.

I am sure that Honda had strong reasons for that design. It would be nice to know their reasons and how it effects the aircraft's performance.

It does look like it allows for a very wide cabin area all the way back to the tail section.

It's so the plane doesn't fall apart when the engines hit vtec.

Understood. But try SFO in Winter. Although fog is less likely then.

Honda's not the first. I believe there was a similar German design back in the '50's. Honda's reasoning for the engine placement was due to reduced noise in the cabin, so I was told. Of all the times I've seen the Honda reps and aircraft, (last week, as a matter of fact) I've never really had the opportunity to ask more in-depth questions like structural, aerodynamic and emergency pros and cons.

I am by no means an expert on this subject, but from what I understood is that the engines are placed above the structural part of the landing gear, so it didn't take too much more to strengthen that part of the wing anyways. The cabin can now have less structural reinforcement since the engines aren't hanging off of it and overall reduce the weight of the plane.

Some Honda guy told me that very quickly, but it sounds reasonable.

Makes sense. Not really that structurally different than twin props, other than the jets are above rather than below the wing..

I thought the Honda Jet design was about fuel efficiency, ownership costs, bang for the buck in light jets, and interior cabin space. I would think having the engines mounted over the wing and on pylons would result in better lift too. Not sure about the noise but who knows?

Definitely not the best bang for the buck though. Wayy too expensive for what you get

An old online gaming buddy of mine does aviation profiles and business is a bit slow at the moment. If you happen to be in the market for something to hang in the man cave he would really like to hear from you. Here is a link to his aviation art site.

And if you are interested for some reason here is his portfolio page.

Hopefully this post wont be taken down because he isn't a vendor. I'm just trying to help out one of the good guys.

Edit - I think he can also do one for a plane you have owned or flown either civilian or military.

Anyone know how to update Garmin GPS databases with a Mac? I only know of the Windows installer.

Also, got to log a little actual IFR today. Popping in and out every couple minutes is so fun!

...^^^... I have used a mac with several Garmin GPS's. IIRC, you have to download the Garmin installer first.

Been a while, but it worked very well and didn't screw up my mac ... and it will give you messages, when to update too.

    Good luck

    ...^^^... Great artwork .. :)

A couple of those F-4's saved our ass ... sounds like the earth is opening up when they come in low for CAS.

Biggest danger is getting hit with spent ammo cartridges.

I know there's a way to do it for the 430 series, but I'm struggling to find a solution to updating my 696

FWIW ... Garmin customer service has been excellent. For some reason, I have had to reinstall the "Garmin Installer" and the customer service lady was great to walk me through the various downloads.

There is usually somebody at the FBO who is good at firmware & software questions too.

Just trying to think of all the possibilities ..

Yeah in Dallas, I use the flight school's computer where I used to work at to do updates. Now I'm in Arkansas and don't have any connections like that, and flying back to Dallas to update just isn't practical
