My bead locks consisted of sheet metal screws.
An old coworker in the 70's had a GTX and bought some nice rims for his slicks. He couldn't bring himself to drill them for screws. So he brought them in and sat them on my bench and said PLEASE.....
He walked by once while the drill was going and couldn't look at me. So I yelled OH SHIT. He ran over saying WHAT,WHAT ? I said NOTHING, ALL DONE..... ROFLMAO.....
Dam this is bringing back some of my best memories.

 

Bead locks are a good idea. Especially running low psi and wrinkling the sidewalls.
We actually mark the tires on our cars and we do spin the tires on braking. No one would think that but shows how hard we run.
Lotus is all nut and bolted. Need to safety wire the knock offs. Get the mini bikes started and then start to load it up Monday. I need this time away.

I used to crew on a pulling tractor. Couldn't do that today....most of what we did was slinging weights while doing set up. 100lb suitcase weights will flat wear you out after 20 or 30 of 'em. Anyway, we had to screw all the rear tires to the rims. Radial tires got so much bite, the wheel would continue to turn and the tire was biting so well, it wouldn't turn. The tractor was a John Deere 6030. The 531 cu in diesel was re-sleeved as a 619 cu in, and there was two 3 stage turbo's. That bad boy cranked out a boat load of torque!

 

Many, many years ago I used to do this shit.

Until I tore my right meniscus coming off a tight, off camber trail, with a bonus sheer cliff in Moab, Utah. And fractured my right clavicle bombing down Silver Mountain, Utah.

Now I just do slow, long distance road rides.

 

I've been wanting to do this for years now. Can I copy your answers on the HAM test? LOL

 

I raced dirt bikes for 17 years....Rode enduro's and hare scrambles....Never got hurt. For the last 10 of those years, and for 7 or 8 years following, I rode mountain bikes....We rode a lot of the same trails around home where I practiced on the motorcycles. Never got hurt. Finally I just got to where I didn't have time or the extra energy, so I quit 2 wheels altogether. 6 months later, I detached a quad in my left leg in a fall chasing my dog around the back yard.....on foot....

Shoulda stuck with the Honda's and the GT's!

I mark my tires also with white shoe polish using the air fill valve as a reference point . never liked drilling holes in the rim to secure the tire to the rim

 

Yeah, I'm definitely slowing down. Not for fear but I'm just tired of the down time vs. risk. The sad thing is both incidents were slow speed things I've done a 100 times.

Just had my semi-annual ultrasound. Checking on an abdominal aortic aneurism. Numbers are good, and it appears stable. No surgery, but I have to confirm with the vascular surgeon next week. Looks like another good Friday.
