You are correct, the Maintenance Guide IS the Manual you want to follow.

Thanks for pointing that out. I would have lost THAT bet. Crap... Now I need to go get plugs cause I didn't do it at my last free service at 25k. Is this straight forward like on the DIY, or things I need to know? I'm just going to buy mine from the dealership.

Yeah it is pretty straightforward, if you do a search there is a thread somewhere on here that walks you thru it and the plugs are pretty inexpensive.

Seems silly when other engines can go 100K on plugs while another engine needs changes at 30K. Are the plugs inferior ? Are the plugs the same for the 4 cylinder as the 6?

I believe they are ordinary Copper Plugs, that's why the 30K change interval, don't think the funky expensive plugs run right in the 4.0s.

The 4 cylinder uses iridium tipped plugs.

Iridium is very very very hard and resistant to wear.

Yes, the maintenance guide states 30K for my truck. It's fairly easy to do, after you research the steps on TW. I bought my new plugs from an OEM Toyota parts seller online. I made a rookie mistake, but it wasn't anything major and I learned from doing it myself. Next plug change will be really easy.

UPDATE: I did find some links (thanks all) on the Spark Plug change. Its pretty straight forward. I bought my plugs directly from the dealer. While I was there I asked the Head Mechanic about rumors of people putting one type of plug on the drivers side and another on the passengers side. This guy actually teaches at the university here so I kind of respect his opinion. He has over 30 years working mostly on Toyotas. Doesn't make him Toyota God, but I'd say pretty versed in the vehicle. He stated that he had never seen nor hear of people doing that before and doesn't recommend it. He stated that in the V6 all 6 plugs should be the same. He thought maybe people where trying to get a performance gain. Just my 2 cents on the topic. Anyway, the plugs cam pre-gapped, but I checked them anyway. All were identical. The passenger side was pretty straight forward, but the driver side...well, lots of stuff to get out of the way. After I took the brackets and basic hoses out of the way, it wasn't too bad. I did use Ant-Seize on all my plugs. Did one at a time and when completed, turned it over for a test. Behold, no issues and took me less than 2 hours. Way to save some $. I love a vehicle that I can actually work on.

What he was trying to tell you was that from the Factory one head has Denso Plugs and the other head NGK. When you do your change you can just use 6 of the same brand.

I asked my local dealer what type of plugs do they use, yesterday while getting a free oil change, he came out with a Denso.

This is REALLY interesting. I took my '13 in for a spark plug replacement at 30k miles (in addition to whatever else was required at that time for maintenance) and was told that it wasn't necessary to replace the spark plugs. Mind you, I was going to pay for the spark plug replacement.

I'm coming up on 53k miles now and don't feel as if I've had any issues. I will be replacing at 60k, however.

Bought my '05 new. Changed the plugs at 45k and they looked great.
