    Who here has NV?
Looking at getting some after my next suppressor purchase and I'm not sure where to start, I have read the difference between the generations but don't have hand on experience with them.

Are you talking helmet mount? handheld? weapon mount? Mono or bino?

I have a set of these
    http://www.opticsplanet.com/bushnell-25x42-nvb.html

They're discontinued and so-so but they get the job done for a set of gen 1s with little zoom

from what I understand, these guys are one of the go tos for tactical level stuff

I don't have a helmet so no helmet mounts (For now) but I do like the idea of a head mount but i don't know if I could use it with an optic on a rifle (Either scope or red dot).
I do like the idea of this for weapon mounted though.

I think a set of bino's would be ideal for spotting pigs/coyotes.

Those pics in the links posted? Is that truly what images look like thru these 'scopes?

I'm guessing some are enhanced for advertising purposes, but if the images are close to what is shown, I'm very interested in learning more.

I've seen some NV gear in his IG videos, but I believe most of his stuff is high $$$$, $2K plus.

I'm not sure, my cousins wifes' brother in law is supposed to have ordered one but I haven't heard anything about how it works.

Most likely they used an additional IR light (or two) to light it up for the ads.

What I find really cool about the X-sight system is it's night vision by amplifying light and additional IR light, and also it has thermal vision.

The only reason I didn't order the X-sight (Vs the vortex HS-T I ordered) was I don't really care for the fact it is 100% digital.

Hey sorry. Have been away. Yes I am part of a night vision hunting training course in Texas. The pics I posted are in no way enhanced. They aren't even good pics in my opinion. I used a iPhone to take pics through night vision with no attachments.

Ok so to answer some stuff above.

We use TNVC and their sister company Nightgoggles.com stuff. My PVS12 Aquila is TNVC Gen 3 and is a 4x fixed weapon mounted optic. I also have a Gen 2+ NightGoggles PVS14 for stalking. Both have pics above.

I am not a huge fan of the helmet mounted stuff. Normally I'll tie the pvs14 monocle around my neck and use it to move and stalk. Then once ready to get us some piggies switch to the rifle with the dedicated rifle mounted night vision.

The Aquila hasn't been available for awhile but another great option we use for the ranch rifles is the D740.

There are laws regarding use of night vision and hunting and it differs from state to state. For instance California lists them as sniper scopes. But to meet that standard they have to hit several criteria. So you can use them as long as they don't meet those criteria.

As for using a monocle with your red dot as mentioned above. Many people do this. It simply attaches behind your red dot. But you have to know what recoil your NV is rated for also as too heavy of recoil can dmg the NVs tube. Another option is head mounted monocle with weapon mounted IR laser. This can get confusing when you have a few people doing this at the same time. All have their pros and cons.

Digital night vision is less expensive and no where near as good. We tested a bunch at the ranch and most had horrible zero hold. One was so bad it didn't even make sense. It was high at 50, low at 100 high at 200 and had massive shifts. The test shooter who is a phenomenal shot got so frustrated he stopped trying.

After that night you couldn't pay me to use ATNs digital night vision.

Thank you for that post. Very good info. I never gave some of the points you mention a thought why or why not some of the NV scopes do or don't work.

    Thanks

I remember when I was originally researching it none of the vendors did either. I kept looking at them from the hunter/shooter perspective and how it would work for me. I've learned a lot since we started hunting with them and even more since teaching hunters to use them. I made mistakes along the way and will gladly give as much info as possible to keep others from having to go through the same.

Please ask away and I'll do better to monitor this thread for that reason.

This is a pic using my iPhone 6 looking through the reticle of a Gen 2+ NightGoggles.com PVS14. No IR only full moon yes for the shot.

    image.jpg
TNVC PVS12 Aquila gen 3 4x fixed rifle scope. Those are steel silhouettes yours looking at. The far tree line is 800 yards. Full moon, no electronic illumination added. Same thing iPhone pic taken through the optic.

Decent entry level scope.sightmark photon 4.5 @100 yards.doesn't compare to gen 3.atn pvs 14 or atn thor.if you want good clarity..depending on how far you plan on seeing...I say get a gen 3.thinking of selling my sightmark and going with atn pvs14.good stuff there buddy.
