I live in TN but have family near lakeland. i took my bike with me a couple years ago and rode at Alafia. you guys have 20 feet of elevation that you use over and over and over and over and over again.

you also have gators....just laying on the damned trail.

that was around valentines day i think in 2014. riding in 80 degree weather after riding in the 20s is a killer. i only managed to get to that trail and haven't taken my bike back since. it's really hard to justify getting away for at least half a day when the only reason you're in town is to see family.

Sometimes you have to improvise when you lack vertical and features...gap the gators!

I almost rode right up the butt of a black bear a few years ago. Good thing he heard me and turned around as I was coming down. Thank god we don't have gators in the PNW though. I don't want my rides to feel like I have entered Jurassic Park.

we don't really have any wildlife to be worried about in middle TN while riding. Maybe snakes? I have seen less than 5 snakes total in the 6ish years that I've been riding.

I ride alafia (the place previously mentioned with the gator) weekly. And I'll say that I encounter gators either on the trail, trail side or in view at least once a month. There's a big river that flows through the park. Lol.

I scared myself coming around the corner to a mountain lion. Apparently, it was one of the sick ones in the area which was the only reason I saw it. I just about pooped myself.

How do most of you secure/lock your bikes in the bed? All I've got is a cable lock which isn't much to prevent theft.

I just never let it leave my sight... it worries the hell out of me usually, no matter where I am. I had a padlock on a fork mount for a while but even then, id be super nervous. it takes no time at all to cut a pad lock.

Exactly my point, I'm trying to think of a way to secure it so if I wanna stop and eat or whatever on the way back from a ride I can do so with peace of mind.

Lay it down on a blanket under the tonneau cover, cable locked to the bed rings with locking tailgate? Out of sight out of mind..........but I still stay within sight of the truck.....that has bulletproof freezeproof sawproof pedal lock on clutch pedal which = starter kill and an old school steering wheel lock with 4 sided key with it usually backed in for tow resistance. If out of sight then I also chain the truck to a giant sign post or building with a parking boot on all 4 rims.

If coming back from a ride sit outside to eat where they have that option, keep an eye on it and no one will have to smell your sweat and wonder why you're all muddy/dusty like a homeless hobo :D That's what I usually do. Places that have good margaritas usually have a patio.
