Resurrecting an old thread here, but just did this install today. Easy as can be. The TRD catback exhaust has a nice throaty burble. Thus far I've only taken it around the block and from one freeway exit to another, but I'm pretty happy with this exhaust. I was worried it wouldn't be "loud enough" but it actually surprised me with how loud it is. Definitely not as loud as the Flowmaster 40-series I had on my old F150 but I'm glad that it isn't.

Thanks for the write-up OP!

As the OP stated, dish soap makes life much easier (I used Dawn). Another easy way to get the exhaust in and out (if you have a floor jack and receiver hitch) is to put a drop hitch in the receiver, jack it up as high as it will go without picking up the tires, slide the whole thing out the back...easy in and out and you don't have to drop the spare tire. Took about 20 minutes each on and off on my Pro to do the reverse swap (TRD back to stock). Biggest pita was the rubber hangers as they were still pretty much new (1200 mi on the truck). Great write up by the OP.

What made you want to take off the TRD exhaust?

Spray silicon spray lube on hanger and rubber and comes off easy.

For some reason the TRD has an annoying drone around 2000 rpm or so. Living in the mountains the truck sees a lot of time in this rpm range. It got worse when I added the shell so I decided to swap it out for a stock set-up (kept the SS Tip so it is a TRD Clone exhaust now). Didn't notice much of any change in actual performance and mileage is about the same also. All that is gone is the noise. From what some folks have posted, the drone isn't really there on the AC models, one guy pulled it off his DC for the same reason as me and his son put it on his AC...no drone. Might be an age thing also, when I was a 20 something I would have loved it...now I'd rather hear the stereo.

Gotcha. I know what sound you're talking about. I like it , lol. But it's not constant for me. I only hear it going up a hill here and there. I could see it being annoying if that's all you hear.

Tried dish soap also. But silicone spray worked way better. Slipped right off the hangers.

Weird. Wonder if they gave you the wrong gasket. I had no issues with mine when I did it. Don't remember it being that thick. And why would they say a gasket is rarely used? You'd probably have a lovely sounding leak without it.

Edit: Part number for gasket matches up to be the correct one. :notsure:

    Maybe just not seated properly?

Just installed the TRD exhaust, thanks for the right up and pictures OP!
Took the truck for a run around the block (did a cop check first ) and that rumble between 2500-3500 rpm is PERFECT! This thing might get me a ticket, or at least cost me more in gas! :oldglory:

It's funny, I was about to install this thing tomorrow, until I read the rest of this thread (I have it bookmarked, and read the write up portion already), and saw the exhaust gasket. It's getting ordered now. Along with new bolts and springs.

Even though my truck is 11 years old, the bolts look new (I had my frame swapped last year, I'm assuming they replaced these at that point). But you know how this goes.... If I don't order them, I'll need them.

    Another satisfied customer...

I installed mine today. It was about as basic as an install can get. I didn't have any issues with the hangers due to using the dish soap, and maybe this time, having an older truck actually helped me out because the rubber was actually pretty pliable. I did use this pick tool I have from my car phone installation days that definitely made working the hangers a lot easier.

I did order, (and use) new bolts, springs, and exhaust gasket (about $50 in parts), but don't think in most cases they would even be needed (my truck is 11 years old), as everything still looked usable. Even the gasket. I'm not sure what it's made of, but it's solid. The old one looked just like the new one, except dirtier.

    The sound....

I have gone back, and forth on getting this exhaust for years, due to fears of it being too loud, or too ricey. Well, I was at the point that I actually needed a new exhaust now, so I took a chance (not ever having heard one in person). I'll say this: You can definitely hear it on start up, and at different rpms. I have yet to stomp on it with this exhaust, but I'm OK with it being louder under heavy acceleration. At about 2000 rpms (about 70 on the highway) I couldn't even hear it. At about 1000 rpms (surface roads) I can hear it. I wouldn't consider it loud, or ricey, but you can hear it. Overall, I like it.

One thing that was somewhat surprising, was (at least going by feel, as I didn't weigh them) was that the TRD exhaust did not feel any lighter than the stock exhaust (it may have even been slightly heavier), despite the muffler on the stock exhaust being a lot bigger.

Wow 5 year old thread, lol I'm really considering buying it for my 09 taco, any even just slightly mpg or power gains? On the TRD website it said it should yield at least a little.. anyone?
