I decided I actually could use a truck since I find myself borrowing trucks from friends more and more frequently. However, I refuse to purchase any vehicle with an automatic transmission, and I wanted a 4x4 truck with as short a cab as possible (since I bought my first car in 1976, a 1971 Honda 600 Sedan, I have only had passengers in the back seat of any vehicle on maybe 8 occasions). The only truck still available in the US that meets my requirements is the Tacoma TRD Sport access cab. Some older trucks did have manuals available but they are extremely scarce on the used market. So I finally decided to buy a truck while I still could. This is only my third new vehicle; the first was a 1979 Mercedes 240 diesel which I kept until 2001 (450,000 miles), the second was a 2002 Subaru WRX wagon, presently with just under 250,000 miles. I drove the Honda 600 for almost 40,000 miles after rebuilding the engine in the kitchen sink of my apartment. The Tacoma will be delivered in late October...

Congrats on your new Tacoma and welcome!

Did you have to do any major engine work on the 240 to get that many miles out of it?

No major engine work on the 240 D. I changed oil every 3000 miles and adjusted the valve clearances twice a year. I think the key was adjusting the valves. Also, never replaced the clutch.
