Welcome to TW! How do you know it is heating up? If you don't know when the last time the trans fluid was changed, I would start by replacing the fluid with something of good quality.

Know you are a newbie, but if you don't respond to the questions asked, folks can't help you.

We'll just tend to wander off, and if you return, you'll still have no answers.

TOB noise is almost always associated with clutch action, not throttle.

Internet diagnosis for sounds is tough, but it could be syncro whine, it could be normal (our trucks have lousy sound deadening) or it could be wear related.

Your new fluid should be a quality GL4 (not GL5) which is brass/bronze syncro friendly.

The heat you feel is probably normal. Well, normal if the insulator boot that seals the hole through the floor is torn or missing, allowing both trans and exhaust heat to enter the cab. Check that out.

Since the truck has unknown history, you should work your way through all the fluids, and give yourself a baseline to maintain from.

Couple of tips on the change.

Be sure the truck is lifted safely, and level.

Remove the fill plug before you remove the drain plug. That way if you have a problem removing the fill plug, you won't have an empty transmission and no way to drive it for help.

The 5spd has a notoriously loud countershaft bearing that whines almost like a supercharger. It should whine in evrey gear but 4th, normal and doesnt affect logevity. My freshly built trans from marlin crawler even does it.

I've done a fair amount of googling on this site and I've come up with the same answer as slander. The W59 is a big whiner in every gear but 4th. Totally normal. I changed my gearbox oil from an unknown to MT90 a month ago. Still whines but it shifts way smoother.

Also, not common knowledge, but the trannies come overfilled from the factory. Once you have the tranny filled on level ground, jack the side of the truck up and add another 1/4 quart. This will smooth up shifting significantly and may help some with the noise. I only hear whining in 5th gear.

Does the whining go away when you press the clutch pedal down, even slightly? If so, you're likely looking at a bad throwout bearing or cracked flywheel. Mine made more of a chirping sound though, but I've heard a whine is also common.

The countershaft bearing whine will go away when you push in the clutch because the trans input stops spinning, should start back up again clutch out and in N and evrey gear but 4th.

I *think* the W59 was behind the 2.4 and 2.7. OP has a 3.4 which I further think was backed by a R150F. I make this point because my transmission whines, too (3.4). Also, since reading this yesterday, I think it also doesn't whine in 4th gear. Does the R150F have the same characteristic? Or, have I got my information wrong?

Edit: It looks like the R150 is the 2wd transmission, and the R150F is the 4wd transmission. Still, just basing this on google, not actual first hand knowledge.

When I switched to synthetic Redline gear oil, my shifter would heat up so bad that at times (freeway driving for long periods) I couldn't even hold my finger to the metal shaft underneath the boot, it would get so hot. It's gotten better over time, but it was really concerning at first. I was assured by Toyota it was normal from switching fluid, for what it's worth.

    Hello,
I have the same whine. Nothing when on the gas, whine when off the gas. 2004 TRD V6 4wd. Driving me nuts. Sounds a little different with the clutch in and out but similar to on and off the gas so I can't tell anything from that. Don't suspect through out bearing but could be.. Concerned it is a differential bearing. Have new Redline MT 90 in trans. and new fluid in transfer case and front and rear diff. New driveshaft center bearing also.
I am planning to continue to drive it a hope to identify it when it gets worse. But, it has been doing it with no change for the last 20,000 miles. Appreciate all info/suggestions/discussions. Thanks to All!!!

DUDE!! what the heck! I wish I woulda known this. I was worried my trans was gonna blow up! I noticed it whines in every gear but 4th. Kinda strange. Very annoying actually, has anyone ever come up with a fix? I hate this fricken whining! Maybe, it wouldn't be worth looking into.
