So about 4 years back once maybe every 6 months my truck wouldn't start after driving it awhile and stopping no crank no start. As the years past it got to the point it needed to be addressed. It always starts back after it sits for awhile. I put new starter and solenoid which came with last year. It drove no issues for about a month and then started it again usually at the worst times.I decided take to a mechanic which at one time was toyota certified. If you have ever had the pleasure of changing out a starter on a tacoma you will understand why i didn't want try mess with again. He has his own shop now and only works on Toyota. He changed starter again. I drove it again another month or so , no issues then it started back. I took back to mechanic and only thing he did was change out starter again. He drove it , but never stalled on him. So once again drove fine for a month or so then its back to no crank, no start from time to time. When it won't start all electronics and lights work, radio, dome light, head light etc with no noticed dimming. The starter relay tested good, battery is about 12.6 when tested. The mechanic did mention it could have something to do with my vehicle protection package fouling up and shutting starter down. I assume it came factory on the window says Permavin Security . The last time it wouldn't start i did as he said and got out and locked vehicle then unlocked , but still wouldn't start. Theres nothing i can find out about this. I'm at my wits end on this. I have almost ruled out ignition switch cause it never dies while driving. In the past my truck has started back within 5 min up to over a hour or two. I try all kinds of crazy stuff to get started , but haven't found anything seems work on a constant basis. The truck has 190,000 miles. Please help !!, if the rust isn't bad enough now this.

I would replace the starter relay, even though it 'tested out' OK. Cheap and easy thing to try. Thats what fixed my no-crank issue, several years ago.

When it does not start can you remember if you can hear the starter relay click, if not then start with the relay and everything leading up to it.

I'm really not sure if clicks or not when won't start . Been awhile since i drove it. I have young child and you never know where you might get stranded nor for how long. When I pulled relay and checked it , it would click. I will change out and see what happens. Thanks.

It also could be a defective park/neutral switch. The next time it does not start, try moving the shifter a little.

I always jiggle and also move from park to neutral. I'm going pick up relay and start driving it again. I do hope that's the problem.

I'm having the same problem with my '08 4.0. Did the start relay fix it?
    Thanks.

Had the same issue with my truck. Intermittent no starts. Sometimes the solenoid would engage but no starter. Sometimes nothing at all. Chased it and chased it thinking it was in my security system. I ended up having corroded battery terminals and corrosion in the wire leading to it. A can of electrical parts cleaner and a wire brush fixed it right up. Ill be changing those out soon enough.
IDK if you have checked that, but sometimes problems are that simple.

Have you checked your electrical grounds? On my taco, the ground on the intake plenum next to the diagnostic port was loose, and would randomly cause no starts.

Took it to the dealer and they replaced the starter. Problem solved.
