After doing Wheelers Pass several times in the last month, I was kind of over it and wanted to find some other trails and get out of town. My buddy with the gold xj and I both had Friday/Saturday off so we decided to check out another trail just across the highway from Wheelers. I worked Friday morning till about noon then ran home and loaded the truck and headed over to my buddies house. I helped him put his tent on and we topped off on gas and got on the road. After missing the turn off, we flipped around and got going the right way. We aired down real quick when another one of our buddies showed up in his 4door jk and we got on the trail.

The begining was rougher than anything and on an uphill grade as we climbed up into the mountains. My truck and the xj started to get a little hot so we stopped and chatted for a few minutes and checked some things over since it was a chatter bump road. The xjs air filter fell off so we duct taped it back on and let the 4 door jk take off. He came back when he saw us stop and then told us he only had a 1/4 tank of gas and the trail was "lame" so headed back. So we aired down to 12-15 and got going again and it was a lot better. The trail got smoother and everything was going good till the xjs intake fell off again. So we stopped and I started to bailing wire it on. When he went to take the key out of the jeep, it got stuck. The ignition was real hard to turn and it wouldnt start. So we finished the intake and went to messing with the ignition. Something in the key lock was messing up and not letting the key turn. After messing with it for an hour and weighing our options, we where about to give up when he just pushed on it and the jeep started. But now it was stuck in the ignition spot. So after talking about it, we decided we would continue on and just disconnect the battery at the camp site.

So we continued on and made it to the camp and got parked as level as we can. Now it was time to turn the jeep off. At one point the jeep was running as my buddy was walking around with the key in his hand lol. So we disconnected the negative on the battery. Still running. Positive. Still running. Crap. Now what? The alternator had to be producing enough power to keep the car going. We where about to just start driving and drive through the night back to town when i saw the fuse box and decided lets try to pull a fuse. Well we pulled the ignition fused and it worked. Jeep was off with no power. We ate dinner and stayed up to see the starts when I called it quits since I had been up since 1 am ish. There was another group camped near us and my buddy said they where up pretty late so he didnt sleep well but I slept like a rock haha.

We got up the next morning around 9, made breakfast and packed up camp. It was now time to start the old heep again haha. So he sat in the driver seat while I replaced the fuse. I dropped it in and he cranked it over and it started right up. So as one mostly stock tacoma passed we bounced the trail and stopped at a few sights and took some pictures. Another 4 door jeep passed us as we where stopped and followed just outside his dust till we hit the highway. There we parked near a hut for some shade and aired up. Airing up, the heeps battery ended up dying so after a quick jump start we got on the highway home and made it back without problems. All in all we did about 70 dirt miles and around 160 ish miles total. 55 miles with a jeep that wouldnt turn off haha. Fun trip and definitely made for some good stories.

PS: Really used my new 35mm lens and am super impressed.

Been super busy working lately... But gotta fund the fun some how. Finally got the bed side protectors knocked out with quick disconnect mudflaps. Pretty happy with them considering all the bends and really doing it all on my own. Will get them painted next week and mounted.

Also got a good start on the swingout. Pictured is what the ruffstuff spindle will slide into and welded too (1.75" x .250) and then all that gets welded to the bumper. Will go just below the tail light. Got that tacked on, holes drilled to be plug welded and got the main tube cut and notched. Still have to cut the spindle down. Once thats done, I can start making templates for bracing and such.

Almost done with the rear bumper swingout. Thing is beefy thats for sure. Gonna do some night wheeling tomorrow with my dad. Should be fun.

1/4" plate all around and boxed on the front, back, and bottom.
[IMG]20160825_150838 by Harrison M, on Flickr

Welds are starting to look good (especially for 1/4") so decided to leave most of them.
[IMG]20160825_151009_001 by Harrison M, on Flickr

And the latch/locking mechanism. Tube sits inside. Will drill a hole through the tube and sleeve it and weld a nut on the back of the shelf. Then use a T handle of some sort to keep it tight. Once again, all 1/4" and this side will be all boxed.

    And closed.

Hahaha I agree with that. Starting to slow down and think through some of my decisions as I think the truck is starting to get cluttered and over done. Probably be one of the last things for armor besides redo the sliders.

Trying to decide if I want to center the spare tire on the tailgate or offset it to the passenger side. Don't plan on putting anything on the swingout besides the tire, trasharoo and a table on the back. Any suggestions or links to builds with off set spares?

    Rocky Gap Night Wheeling
    08/28/2016

Well night wheeling was fun. A full day of working in the garage and then my dad and I hit up rocky gap to do it at night. It was pretty hard but a lot of fun. No real problems. Dragged the rear axle a few times real good as the trails got some good rutted lines and one pucker moment when I slipped off a pretty big rock.

Pictures didnt come out that good and mostly my dads jeep but still cool non the less.

Also been working hard on the swingout. Its about 90% done. All thats left is a few gussetts, some final grinding, finding a way to keep the swingout open and from swinging all the open and drilling the mounting plate holes out and getting some studs and lug nuts.

02 Tacoma, fixed with curse words.
I love night wheeling, i wheel with a bunch of rageing alchies so they dont go out at night due to campfire festivities. I used to go all the time in college, i miss it for sure. This will sound stupid, but check to see if you can still get your tailight lens off with that swingout. Looks good on the bumper, im kicking around building one as well to get the tire out of the bed.

Was my first time night wheeling. I've raced dirt bikes at night and always thought it was fun and this was just as much fun.

Hmm I'll have to check aboit the tail lights lens. Driver I can. Passenger I should be able to but may be tight.

That was the main reason I made it. Not enough room when fully loaded for a few days of camping. And let's me have a full size spare without issues

On the topic of the swingout, got 4 wheel studs and lug nuts from o reillys and discount for the mounting plate and also stopped at McFadden dales and got an aircraft spring loaded pin to keep the swingout in place when open... sucker cost 40 bucks though. In the final stages of it before paint.
