First thing I'd do with a sweet double cab import hilux is put some 20" wheels on it. NOT.

At least he'll sell without them. Super cool truck.

You could probably get a much better deal going to an importer and geting one. Since its over 25 years old, legally importing one is a piece of cake. Literally no harder then going to a dealership and waiting 6-8 weeks for it to arrive.

So I have been told by a TDI landrover dealer that it's illegal to actually drive a diesel that's imported.. it has to be classified as a ATV or farm truck because of the EPA rules and regulations.. is all that true? He said Landovers were like that

As far as I have read from all the impotation rules. If it is over 25years old, anything goes. Emittions, safety, whatever. EPA has no jurisdiction at the 25 year mark.

Don't take me wrong... I think this is pretty neat. But, you can purchase a late 80's 4 Runner and lift it for much less and have the same seating capacity with left hand drive, like everyone is used to. Hell, you can purchase an early-mid 80's model and even have a solid front axle.

It is. Second sentence; "Sports the 2L 2.4 liter 4 cylinder diesel engine with manual 5 speed transmission".

They didn't sell them here. From the ad: "imported from Japan to California a little over a year ago" I doubt this rig was mfg'd for the American market.

As for the diesel, not sure whether they ever sold those out of American dealerships. I remember seeing a diesel or two of that vintage back in Wyoming when I lived there in the 80s, but they might have been converted by some of those clever ranchers. Or imported.

Anybody know? Were you able to buy one of those 80's hilux with a diesel off an American dealership lot?

That's an awesome truck. I had one exactly like that (well, it was white, with smaller wheels, but other than that exactly the same 1988 model) in South Africa with the 2.4 liter diesel. It had 245,000 km on it when I sold it to move to the US and it was running as strong as the day when it was new. I would love to have one again, but the $20k price tag is crazy.
