I have recorded 5 consecutive days my transmission failed with less than 500 miles on the truck. I filed a complaint with Toyota corporate. They told me to work with the dealer. So, I followed their instructions. The dealer cannot replicate the issue after having the car for a total of 5 days (two separate tickets). The dealer test drove the truck, and in addition, says their computer shows everything is operating to specification. It is clear that the dealer is not empowered to solve my problem unless they can log something with their Techstream, which likely, cannot diagnose a transmission.

To date, Toyota has not solved this and/or assured I was a satisfied customer. I am hoping this will change very soon.

To be fair, I will certainly report how Toyota takes care of me if and when they do. I am putting faith in Toyota to stand behind their product.

Just had TSB-0077-16 applied last week. Went on a 500 mile trip - Unbelievable improvement. I would say 80% smoother shifting of all gears. Up shift hang is almost gone. I got into one situation on the trip where the trans hung in again, but it was on a down hill grade. Noticed a similar down hill hang in first gear as well, similar to before the TSB but much improved from before the TSB (again about 80%). It feels like they tuned the Atkinson phase of the engine, because the torque curve feels more linear? Is that possible. The engine is much more linear and especially with the gears shifting a little more aggressively - This truck is a joy to drive now. I'm not joking around here. The improvement is really huge! Creeping in traffic is smooth now. No abrupt jolt between first and second. In fact with the more linear throttle response the truck stays in first instead of popping up and down from first to second. When I got back home I calculated 24.59 MPG. That's +2 MPG on the last 500 miles. Toyota nearly hit this TSB out of the park. I'm very happy. If a second TSB can fix the remaining very minor shifting hag when driving down hill, I'll be really happy, and from what I've seen here I bet they will final fix it. By the way my truck is running 89 octain.

Just did mine yesterday...My jeebus what an improvement and I thought it wasn't that bad in the first place... My issue before update is that it liked to downshift to soon and would not hold gears long enough when trying to gun it...lead foot kinda fixed that.. The truck would try to engine break as soon as I took my foot of the gas to coast.. I had only like half a second delay when going from r to d or d to r..

The Tsb has fixed all of the issues so far.. Transmission behaves more like ect holding gears longer and shifting smoothly and without notched jerky shifts. I don't have to floor it to get it to respond up a hill. No delay instant shift from r and d.. The 2k rpm vibration has been greatly decreased. The response when in S-mode is better. If i had to describe it would be like ect without holding the gears at 2k rpms.. The difference is so big everyone should be doing the upgrade.

Leaves me to wonder are the new 2017's are coming with change or are they on the old programming.

Had my TSB a few weeks ago. Heres what It has corrected. Cruise control quirks improved. Not all over the rpm range. Morning first start up shift from park to R & D a little better. Downshifts coming to a stop much smoother. Overall transmission IMPROVMENT 50%. Still feels like the new 3.4 lacks grunt!

    This ^ It's a 3.5L
I wish they made a turbo or Diesel option. Anyway now that it shifts much better you can dip into the power a lot more. Wonder if the 17's are even better still?

    The tsb works.

My delay from r to d and p to d is pretty much gone. Truck feels smoother overall while cruising. Downshifting to a stop feels smoother. The truck also feels like it takes less effort to get going, before j felt like I always needed Ect on.

    Toyota did a great job.

    None...yet!
Its the nature of the beast. The 3.5L is all eco fuel economy at low rpms, behaving and feeling like a 4 cylinder. Above 3500 rpms, it eats fuel and puts out some power. It's not a torque monster though and so no grunt at all. The days of Jeeps 4.0L straight 6 in a 4x4 that made peak torque at 2000 rpms are over. But then so is the 15 mpg in a 3500 pound jeep too. Unless of course the USA gets a diesel. Then best of both worlds except for the added complexity of the emissions.

I thought the tranny was OK before the TSB, now it's better. It gets up and goes without lugging so much and somehow gets a little better fuel economy too. I guess a lot of people were coming from Corvettes and Cummins Diesels so they are disappointed. The 3.5L is pretty good for a Tacoma. I always had the 2.7L's in my Toyota trucks, so I'm getting as good fuel economy and way more power.

Had the TSB done yesterday while doing my 10,000 mile service. I honestly never really noticed anything wrong with my transmission. Every once in a while there would be a delayed P to D but nothing that really had me concerned. After the update, I'm mad at myself for not doing this sooner. It acts SOOO much better. I feel like there's better throttle response too, I don't have to put my foot as hard into the pedal as I used to in order to get up and go. Huge improvement.
