It's even hard for in state here! Didn't draw out the past 4 years for anything. This year I was able to get an over the counter archery deer in unit 21 (only 10% chance harvest last year). 4 days and counting for my first archery hunt

I've got to wait another month before deer season! Well, "regular" deer season. We have an anterless only season in our county for the entire month of September.

We have archery, black powder and rifle seasons here. You can use any weapon during rifle season but only archery and black powder during black powder, and only archery during archery season. It's not ideal but it works. The rut usually falls right around black powder season, which has made me enjoy it more when I was a big smoke pole guy before. Archery is still my favorite though! I use my bow deep into the rifle season.

I still like BP...rifle is good too but my favorite is bow hunting. Its been a couple seasons that I havent killed a deer with my bow...I had what I thought was a kill on a nice spike last season but it must have hit shoulder bone because it got up and took off running...I never did recover it.

That's the worst. Although, I rarely shoot beyond 30 yards, I have been pretty lucky and only lost 1 deer in my hunting career. It sounds like the exact same thing happened to me. I stuck him right in the scapula. I could see the arrow sticking out of his shoulder as he sauntered off.

I heard a loud pop and the spike fell to the ground kicking...I thought for sure I had a good shot on him...as Im getting ready to check him out he takes off running up the hill, I tracked him for a few hundred yards and the last I saw of him was him running full speed over another hill...so I just called it a loss.

I went on a walk this afternoon, somehow manages to walk straight into a family of elk just grazing in the trees at 5 pm. They were feeding toward me, had the wind in my favor, so I decided to wait and see if there was a bull or at least a spike, boom, spike at 53 yards, just had to wait or him to take a few more steps into my lane. Then all of the sudden they all spoke, and they're gone. Wander around till about 7:30, start heading back to the truck. Hear an elk bugle, so I'll cow call, get calls back, decided I'm gonna circle around and get down wind. Make the circle and get within 30 yards of the HUNTER making the calls. Start walking up the meadow, look up, cow elk running back in the trees. I called it quits and went back to the truck.

    Walked 6 miles 4 to 8 pm.

    Hope you enjoyed my book.

    Been there, done that.
I called in a couple hunters last year, I was the bull, they were the cows. When I realized it, I called it a day too.

Yeah kinda sucked, thought I was the only one dumb enough to drive back where I was. He was on a fourwheeler, and he went right past the sign that says no vehicles part this point, where I stop.

well last season opening day I take my wife out and right at day break a couple cow elk come sneaking down the hill where we were at, she had an either or tag so I told her to get ready...not even 5 minutes later some idiot comes out of the wood line smoking a cigarette hitting his cow call!! of course the elk took off up the hill, I was thinking is this guy serious?? then after he's done smoking he sprays himself with scent killer:boom:I knew then what a moron he was. we never did see any elk the rest of gun season..

nothing yet...still early and lots of food out. The weather changed in the last couple of days so the animals should be more active. Bad news is its colder now.
