285/75 16 Cooper ST MAXX here. Definitely bog down the engine, but such an awesome tire!

Oh my god do they ever. When you take them off its a huge difference. I didnt realize how bad starting out in 1st gear was until they came off.

Kind of thinking about going back to stock everything here soon. Not sure if I am trading the truck in or not and I want to see how the truck drives again stock.

A gear ratio change cures the issue(s). Keep your truck. If you have a manual trans, you can get away with 4.56 or 4.88's.
Mine has the 2.7 motor w/ auto trans. Running 258-75-16's would have killed it had I not re-geared to 5.29's. Now, business as usual.

    Good luck.

Thinking about getting the 4 ply grappler at2's. Either in 265/70/17 or 255/75/17 for my 2004 Tacoma prerunner. What would you guys recommend?

What trans do you have and what kind of off road use will you be doing?
Why do you want a 17" wheel for off road?

4 banger peerunna. 265/75/16 Cooper ATPs. May consider a larger tire when these wear thin.

Auto trans. Mostly basic trails, fire roads, some desert stuff, and simple crawling.

I currently have wheels that came off of a sport tacoma that are 17" that's all.

While stock, I had 4.30 gears and went to 265-75-16's, and they bogged me down significantly. I re-geared to 4.88's and that was perfect.
Not sure what the calculations are for the 17" wheels to get to a 32" tire but, find out what your gear ratio is before you do anything. 17" tires out this way cost more than the 16's.

    Good luck.

My stock gearing is 4:56. Is this good or bad?

Had 265/75/16 Kumho ATs until yesterday. The sidewall on a rear tire randomly blew out on the highway.
Because the truck was bogging so badly going uphill at highway speed here in NV I chose to go with a less aggressive Cooper in 265/70. The slightly shorter and lighter tire makes a significant difference.
So I sacrificed looks for drivability. I am officially old now...
