NorCal: South-East Bay Mod Day #2 - 9/17/16

When I took off the first hub that went bad, apparently the axle threads were burred on the bottom and I didnt catch it until it got super tight. Tried to clean it up as best I could and didnt have a die that size. Nut came off with some force and the threads were done for. Didnt have a replacement axle at the time, so lots of torque got a new nut back on to get me back on the road. Now Im fixing that with a new axle end since the threads are toast.

Yep. Getting the shaft in such a small hole with a large c clip on the tip takes some force. You need what they call a "sludge hammer" and a block of wood. I usually have wood though.

Is that what you were doing at the last mod day at MJ's? Might have to get you a winged helmet and cape so you can actually look like Thor after wielding that sledge.

I like it. All I do is work, babysit, be lazy, wrench and then wheel at the mall constantly

 

I used this method replacing the outer. thors hammer never worked well for me.

Inners are a piece of cake..
If the threads aren't super toast. you can actually save them by re threading them. Just have to find the correct die set.

 

Wish that shit work. Mushroomed a black steel pipe. @JLee saw the pipe.

 

Its the outer that needs replacement, and the threads are super toast. Totally my fault, I lost patience after spending a couple hours trying to get the nut off and cleaning up threads, after about the 5th try I was pretty done and just wrenched the nut off and it just marred the threads. Ended up smoothing off about an inch of the axle end and cleaning up the remaining threads as best I could but it still crossthreaded the whole way on. Like I said, i still check torque on it and it hasn't moved at all, but now the wheel bearing is going bad and I have a replacement on hand that needs to get thrown on, so I'll have to address the axle at the same time

 

I need a spare axle too. I have a spare OEM sitting at home.
