I'm in the market to buy a new truck and was dead set on buying a black 3rd gen. However, I can't seem to find a single 2016/17 AC that doesn't have a ton of orange peel. Is this common on all dark colored Toyotas that aren't metallic? My 1st gen taco (white), scion tc (metallic blue), and FJ (silver) dosent have any noticeable orange peel. I've looked at 4 different black tacos they all seem to lack depth.

I've heard complaints on the prefix 3 vin (Mexico) paint jobs. My 5 Vin (Texas) is slicker than greased owl shit.

Also, black and red will show any defect 10x worse than the rest.

My black taco only has orange peel on the bottom all the way around. It's beautiful and smooth all the way around though

That's actually a coating on the metal under the paint to resist stone chips that can cause rust.

I'm the one who started the thread on the the Mexico black (VIN 3) being way below standards for a factory finish. I just got my truck from Texas and I can't complain with the paint. Some may say I'm anal about the paint but I am a professional painter and I know what is Satisfactory and what is UnSat. I took some of my coworkers to look at the Mexico Black and they could not believe how poor the paint was. Don't get me wrong, some may not notice but if you compare the two, the average person will notice once it's pointed out. The front bumper area will be more orange peel looking because it is a single stage paint as compared to the rest of the truck which is base/clearcoat. $.02

My MGM has what looks like some minor orange peel if you view it at a certain angle up close. It isn't a huge deal for me though.

It took less than 3 weeks anyways for me to put some nice long scratches all the way down the passenger side. I known owning a 4x4 truck means the paint is never going to look perfect.

It's a work in progress. See my build thread.
My Texas black AC Sport is smooth except where the anti-rust coating is applied.

Just what I figured on production date, Something changed along the way from when it first was made in Mexico. Either the spray equipment went south or the program that calculates the amount of paint to spray is not accurate because OP is correct when he says there is no depth to the finish. It is the exact symptom, it looks like it needs more clear coat.

my 2016 trd sport black has the exact problem. I didn't notice at first (new car love/euphoria) but have since can see how the paint has inconsistent reflective qualities all over cab body. I brought it up to Toyota and am waiting for a solution.
