Wait what? That story had the makings to be great and then turned mediocre. Sigh.

So I've kept my mouth shut for a lot of this kind of talk, but if you guys weren't born black you'll never know what it's like to be black. For you, simply complying with police is just fine. Even when you don't, you receive multiple chances to change your mind. Yes, complying will work the majority of the time; however, I've had multiple bad experiences with cops to go along with the good. My dad's a retired cop, so I know exactly what to do and how to act when pulled over. That calmness and compliance didn't help, say, when i was pulled out at gunpoint in front of the LA Convention Center leaving the LA Auto Show while I was still studying at USC. After having my face slammed on the hot black-painted hood of an LAPD Crown Vic on a hot day in LA, and assuming after their disappointment with finding nothing in my car after pulling me over for no reason (that was provided to me), I was told to get out of there and count my blessings that my dad is a cop. If you don't understand, fine I don't expect you to. However that's no reason to talk about your fellow Americans like that when there are clear issues in this country.

Sorry to disappoint, next time I'll slap a cop across the face.

Damn that's rough, granted LA is a lot different than Santa Cruz County, but still no excuse for actions like that. I would be scared if I was the cop, granted they knew it was a shooting and I could have had a gun on me. It's a tough situation for both sides and unfortunately the suspects often get the raw end of the deal, especially if you get a dick of a cop, but on the same end, too many good cops have been hurt/killed for nothing. It's a vicious cycle and I can't see it ending ever.

But why does is have to be about being black?? In the same opinion, you mention being black and "fellow Americans". It's either Americans or not. Wtf do I care if your black, brown, yellow, green? We all shit sitting down, bleed red, and lord knows die someday.

I ain't a damn clairvoyant or anything, but I'm pretty damn sure there are people from all backgrounds who have had experiences with cops. Both good and bad.

I agree that they did a great job in your experience today, as they should. I have plenty of respect for cops, since my dad served 30 years, but it boils down to the people behind the badge and how they're trained. For example, the NYPD supervisors criticizing officers for not targeting black men. Anyway, don't want to turn this into politics and all that. I just needed to say something

Agreed. Its all depends on the cop. With any job there are people who are good at it and people who are bad. But complying shouldn't get you shot. 99% of the cases in the media have had 1 thing in common. Someone wasn't complying or even aware of how they should act. Hands should be visible. Every hidden hand is a threat. Many Americans black, brown, yellow, white, red don't keep this in mind. Many of my close friends are police officers. They deserve to come home safe. I'm sorry you have had run ins with bad cops. My question to you is. Did you file a complaint? if not then the problem will just continue and protesting wont fix it.

I agree for the most part. I'm very glad my dad came home every night. However, the media only reports what it wants to, so I take that with a grain of salt. Resisting arrest doesn't mandate getting killed either, and when the FBI police homicide reports almost the same number of black people are killed as white, when black people are only about 13% of the population...something is wrong there.

Crime rates will put that in a better perspective. But I agree there is a problem and something should be done but I'm not sure anyone has a good answer yet.

I don't care if you care if I'm black. Americans are, in fact, made of people of different races with different cultures and histories that should be celebrated, which is why it matters to me that I'm black, Mexican and Chickasaw Native American. See my last post for a response to your second paragraph.

There's a lot to say about what drives crime too, but I agree that so far there hasn't been a good answer. The thing that got me out of south central was education...outside of south central. The schools were and are terribly underfunded
