I put a piece of plastic under the motor overnight. Motor was NOT run, and next day there was a lot of oil on the plastic sheet. Not from the plug or filter and the pan way up top looks pretty cruddy/flaky and covered in oil . I deduce from this that the pan is rusting through.. Whats the easiest way to change it, and also it looks like the bolts on the rear of the pan are difficult to get a socket onto them?

Pretty sure I've read to unbolt the engine from tranny and lift it high enough to work it.....or just lift it up from motor mounts and WISH you had unbolted it.

If a piece of metal that is filled with oil has rusted through, you've got some other serious rust issues that need attention.

    Be sure

    1) you know that's the leak point

    2) that the frame isn't about ready to break in two.

At this point in time to fix a oil pan the engine is coming out.

To get the engine high enough to to get a hand in to unbolt the sump .

Maybe the OP has a 2WD so does not have to worry about the front differential

Then I am thinking it is not the oil pan .

    Oil cooler ??

It is strange for a factory pan to rust but I've seen quite a few aftermarket ones rust through.....make sure it not your valve covers....they drip down the block and look just like a pan leak.

if it's the rear of the pan I'd bet valve covers.
