Hello all, I plan on changing all my drive line fluids this weekend and am a bit unsure about the rear diff. I believe I have an open differential and NOT a limited slip. I lifted the entire rear of the truck. When I spun the drivers rear wheel, the other rear spun in the opposite direction. This means "open diff" correct? If so, can I use Mobil 1 or any synthetic API GL5 80w-90 friction modified oil? I only ask because I have read here that the LSD doesn't like the synthetic friction modifiers. If I do have and open diff, it shouldn't matter what I use, right? And is the capacity for the rear diff 2.5 quarts?

Thanks in advance for any info and everyone have a great Labor Day weekend!!

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Yes, you have an open diff. You can put whatever your heart desires in there. As for quantity, I'm not sure. I always filled them till the oil was at the fill hole. And a word of caution, pull the fill plug FIRST and then the drain plug.

Hey LITacoQ...There is usually a sticker or tag on rear diff that states if it's LSD. I recently changed the rear differential fluid in my '03 PreRunner (Auto) and it's not a "limited slip".
    I used Mobil 1 synthetic 75w/90.

It says it in your owner's manual too. The capacity and type of oil. You can run your code on the inside of your door jamb for all the info you need also. It tells you what gears you have, if it's an open diff or not. Much easier than raising your truck in the air

Thanks for the tip, but my truck was undercoated, so there is no sticker to be found.

    a bunch of new/used parts....and some skids.
fill plug first, because if it is for some strange reason totally bound up and rusted on..... you still have oil in your dif. =]

I "thought" I saw on this site where the Tacoma Sport only had the Limited Slip Diff, but I could be mistaken.

Awesome! thanks man. Looks like I got a 8"ring gear/ 4.30/ 2 pinion open diff. Kind of makes me wonder what the rest of those codes mean:oops:. Thanks again

They didn't have Tacoma Sports till 05 & newer I thought. I say that cause I had an 06 Tacoma sport which amounts to a hood scoop, and color coded from the factory plus a limited slip. But now on my 04 it came color coded from the factory and it's not a sport. I think 1st gens were limited not sports. But I don't have a limited slip. Mine is a B03A. I have the E locker.

Thanks to all for their help and input. Got my Trans and Transfer case AMSoil GL4 and front/rear Diffs Mobil 1 gl5. My truck definitely seems to be shifting a lot smoother. Should have done it sooner!

Be safe all and have a great holiday weekend!
