I just got a 2016 Tacoma, and was really happy with it. But last week I started it, and it was running rough with the engine light on. I took it straight to the dealer, figuring that I'd get it back in an hour or so. By the end of the day, they still hadn't identified the problem. By the end of the second day, they called and said one of the cylinders was dead. Zero compression.

Has anybody else had this happen to them?

Got a call from the shop today. They are "quarantining" my engine, an indication that it might be a manufacturing issue. So I might not be in an exclusive club for long. The V-6 in the 2016s is a new engine. They're sending out a new short block. So I'll be the proud owner of a new car with a rebuilt engine. I called the Toyota Customer Service line on Monday. They gave me a case number and said I'd hear from someone by the close of business today. As of the close of business today, Wednesday, I've got a case number, but no return call.

OP I'm sorry that is happening. You are in the best support network here on TW though. There are some techs & super smart people & some wise @zz -- you'll figure it out.
The new member section doesn't get much action other than welcomes.
    Sometimes people pipe in.
Have you started a thread or looked into the 3rd Gen section? That way you may find others with similar issues.
I hope your problem is solved quickly.

Similar problem here. Bought 2016 Taco SR5 last Monday with 319 miles on it. Drove it minimally on Tuesday and Wednesday when the check engine light came on so I took it to the dealer. On Friday, I was told they'd have to pull the cylinder head to see what the problem was since #5 cylinder was only producing 60% compression. Today I went to the shop and the truck is on a lift, radiator/valve covers and transmission seem to have been removed.

Since I only had it for less than 2 days and 81 miles, I've asked for a replacement vehicle. So far the dealership is stalling. I'm guessing that if they don't replace this vehicle, I won't see it for another 10 days or so.

    Major unhappiness here.

Wow, guess it's true when they say wait a few years after a new model comes out for them to work out the bugs

Never been a problem with the 6 Toyotas I've owned previously and didn't expect this to happen. However, the service tech did tell me that there are problems with the Atkinson engine.
