How do you have your ScanGaugeII mounted in your 3rd gen?

    Let's see some pics!

Please explain why you chose that location and any tips you can share about the mounting or cable routing.

    Thanks!

Here's mine (sorry, about the picture quality, but you get the idea):

    IMG_2110.jpg

    IMG_2113.jpg

I chose this location because it is easy to see without looking down and the cable routing is super easy. I have the backlight very dim so it's not distracting at night. It's just held there by a bit of that gummy pad material they sell for holding your cellphone or radar detector. It says put just fine, but I'll do something that's less of a kluge when I've settled on a final location.

I don't like that it's obvious from the outside. I'm finding that I don't look at it much, so it may be wasting this prime dashboard real-estate. In my last car I looked at it all the time, but the Tacoma has a lot of built-in functions for things I need more often (miles per gallon and outside air temperature for instance).

Currently I am monitoring both transmission temperatures, intake air temperature, and water temperature. If I add more accessories, I may drop IAT and add voltage.

Each to their own. Do they have 3rd gen transmission temperature working on the Ultragauge?

Why the preference over the scanguage? I am in the market for one or the other, but don't see the real difference.

The scangauge is tiny compared to the ultragauge. I honestly just don't like the look of a 90's monitor sitting in my dash.
    image.jpg
Compared to this, where the eye has a better view of perception while driving. I also feel like I'd have to squint if I'm going say 40 mph just to read a scangauge.
    image.jpg

I'm sure both are customizable but the ultragauge offers so much more with setting up your gauges and various pages. The top model also reads transmission temps as well.

Had both..... scangauge gives 4 gauges at a time.
I use it for volts, intake temps, trans temp, and water temp.
I dont need anything else displayed on it.

Ultragauge offers 8 iirc per page, and a few scrolling or static pages.

It was overkill for me, but the display seems better.

Ultra is also cheaper i think..... but the mx is a little more than the base.......if they dont have trans temps for the 3rd gen, u can always work with them as a beta tester, its time consuming due to the fact they only contact u via email. The plus side is, it only takes 1 person to step up to the plate and u can get trans temps for everyone else.

That said, does the scangauge even have trans temps for 3rd gen yet?

Oh i forgot.... ultragauge offers alarms based on mileage, rpm, and speed.... never used em myself tho.

And as for the hp and tq values.... some of ya may want to tinker with these, im not sure how accurate they are.
Scangauge had me at just shy of 400hp.

Yeah also the alarms can be handy and you can set them up to when they trip, for instance the fuel alarm. If you want it to go off 50 miles before you're empty it will...or you can set it to 15 miles before empty etc.

The alarms also go off for like engine codes as well indicating somethings going on like when I had a p0171. The ultragauge can clear these codes.

I know I'm in a scangauge thread but this might give a better detail of how to work an ultragauge and how to set it up (note this guy is in England and basing his gauges off the metric system)

I chose the ScanGaugeII based on previous experience, excellent customer service, the smaller size, but primarily because it can read 3rd gen trans temperature where the Ultra Gauge cannot last I checked. It's a simple but power interface with one of the best limited-input menu systems I've ever seen on an embedded system. Buttons on the back of the ultragauge are a turn-off for me because it limits mounting options. If I need the capability of an ultragauge, I'd be inclined to use an app on my phone or tablet.

That said, the Ultragauge seems fine, it just wasn't my choice.

This is the chief reason why I chose scangauge over anything else. It's small, simple and elegant. I did the tape measure mod on my scan gauge and have it clipped on top right next to my mirror. I routed the cable up behind A-pillar and under the headliner.

That said, those with Scangauge, what do you have configured on all four corners of your scangauges? I have Trans fluid temp, horse pwr on the right side, and something 'pound foot weight torque' (not sure what it is) and fuel efficiency on the left.

Can you provide a link or more information on this "tape measure mod"? Looks interesting.

    I have
    Trans Temp 1
Trans Temp 2 (I believe there's some info to be gained from the difference, but one of the two would probably be OK)
Intake air temperature (proxy for under hood temperature and heat soaking. Also IAT affects power output)
Water Temperature (Much more accurate, well at least more precise, than the cluster gauge)

It's from the 2nd gen forums. The OP deleted his original post since, but basically what I did is, went to the dollar store, bought two tape measure for $2 bucks, removed the clips from the tape measures. Removed the back cover of the scan gauge, and attached it to the back of the scangauge, using it's own screws and clipped it to the headliner. Here are the quotes of some of the OP's replies I found :

That's a cool idea; thanks for sharing. I'll have to see if that works out for me. I was going to mount it to the back of the overhead console but my old eyes can't focus that close anymore. Otherwise it would be sweet. But up at the front of the headliner would be fine if it doesn't interfere with anything else (mirror, sun visors).

    Isn't this the thread?

I have mine laying around, I've never even given it a thought to mount it in the new truck since the main reason I used it was for transmission temperature. I like that it has the ability to tell the readiness of the major sensors so when I'm due for an inspection I can see what's going on. My Vette has throwing an intermittent CEL because of a bad connection and I had to repair the connection and wait for the sensor to go ready before it could pass inspection.

I need to find a way to mount it that I can remove it in a pinch if I need to transfer it between cars.

Yes, you found it. That's the one. Here's the thread for those interested. Thanks man.

It doesn't interfere. It's the perfect spot. I could look up and see it. At night time driving the pale blue light shines and illuminates you a bit, but it doesn't bother me. I think it looks just right next to the mirror up there.
