We took the awesomely smooth dirt roads down towards the Hans Flat Ranger Station, where we checked in and made a few adjustments to our reservation. The first night was at Cleopatra's Chair, so we made our way up there.

The rocky stuff came upon me rather...suddenly...as Ben saw. I was expecting the smooth roads we had just left and then suddenly there was a rutted rocky drop off that I had to slam the brakes for and still hit a little too fast. :p

Lots of high-clearance required sections on the way up there. Rarely needed 4wd, but the new 33's were so much more comfortable.

Headed south from Cleopatra's Chair towards our next stay at The Neck.

Did a little day hike out along a really narrow peninsula (could literally spit off each side at the narrowest points) to an amazing view
[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

Continued our way to the Neck
[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

We got there at like 3 and had the rest of the day to chill, which was lovely. Even had a Golden Eagle make an appearance!

    Spectacular views...

Definitely needed to chock the wheels...roll either way and it's a loooong way down.

Got to maze overlook and did the hike/scramble down to the harvest scene

[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

    So cool!

[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

Pretty crazy hike. This wasn't even half as bad as it got later on!
[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

    Made it to the bottom!
[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

And then we headed out of the park to the south so we could have a campfire and so we didn't have to pack out our shit..

Quite the contrast from the bottom of those canyons to these views!

Never got a group campsite shot, but this was where I ended up :p

Niiiiice. My wife and I hit Capitol Reef and did the Cathedral Valley drive at @DoorDing 's recommendation in fall of 2014. We'd definitely go back there to explore more, and along the Waterpocket Fold and Notom Bullfrog Road. We hit Burr Trail to go have a peek at the fold from an overlook. I realized after I had schmutz on my cameraphone lens, which pissed me off, but we were moving very fast because we had to make Canyon Lands by that night.

    Burr Trail

Approaching the Fold just above the Burr Switchbacks

Wheeling up the wash to hike to the overlook

Whoa, dude. The Fold, looking north toward Capitol Reef...

    and to the south.

Then we did a quick run down and back up the swithcbacks to the Notom road junction at the bottom of the fold. I'd like to explore the whole thing from north to south.

Encounter on the way to Cathedral Valley...after this all my pics suck, and your are better. This rig was from Germany and covered in license plates, and a mural of lions and gazelles and shit on the side!

Bluffs at the end junction with Highway 12.

Stopped in Moab for supplies and we all took much-needed showers. Then headed out to find a spot to spend the night before doing Lockhart Basin the next day.

Camped at Ledge E campground. Climbed up a rock formation to get a great view of camp.

Not many photos from the entrance into Needles. We went up and over Elephant's back and mainly just wanted to get going so we wouldn't end up in the way and we could get to camp before sunset.

Another side-blotched lizard saw us off at our last stop in Canyonlands
[IMG]Side-blotched Lizard by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

Ate lunch, then parted ways. @at_olw and I headed towards Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument for the night and @m3bassman headed up to Arches on our separate ways back home.

Camp for the night actually ended up being in Glen Canyon NRA in Crosby Canyon
[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

The next day we were going to spend hiking to Observation Point in Zion, but it was the free-entry week at National Parks so the crowds were so insane and the winds were so strong that we decided to skip it. It didn't make much sense to stay for 6 hours to camp in the strong winds when home was only 8 or so hours away, so we decided to call it and parted ways so @at_olw could blast and I could poke along. :p

Had a great final encounter in Zion, though!
[IMG]Untitled by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

And now I'm all caught up prior to Colorado in 2.5 weeks! :D

Looking at these photos...the sharpness came out a bit excessive. I was testing the "Sharpen for screen" export option but I think I'll be skipping that in the future. It works great on my own screen but with Flickr's sharpening it's too much.

Nice! Yeah we didn't get down that way this trip. I think @at_olw had gone on our last trip before meeting up with me, so I was fine saving it for the next trip.
    The Fold looks crazy!

    I hate you.

Upside: our 11-month-old boy is finally sleeping through the night pretty well, and I have a new battery for the teardrop, but still have to get a lift on the "new" truck.

Haha, I feel like this is the response I have heard from most people that have recently had kids. Sounds like it's time to get him out there! My mom took me out into the field for her work when I was less than a year old... you can do it!

Did a trip to Colorado last month with @at_olw. Such amazing scenery! Horrible jeep, atv, and dirt bike idiot traffic, but the scenery made up for it. And for all of our fretting over the weather, we never really had any issues with muddy trails or getting rained out of anything. We did alter our plans a little bit but who knows if it made a difference. I'd like to think it did, and we got some extra un-planned scenery, so that was a plus!

We were originally going to meet in Mojave on Friday night but after working almost 60 hours that week I wasn't prepared enough and decided to leave early Saturday morning. So I drove from San Diego to Colorado in a day...that happened.

Stopped briefly at four-corners to check it off of Timmy's list. Got there 20 minutes before closing. Perfect timing!

Then camped off of the Dolores River near Rico. Thank goodness for freecampsites.net!

We zig-zagged our way between highways 145 and 550, going from Ophir to Ouray via Ophir, Black Bear, and Imogene Passes.

Didn't stop for photos of Bridal Veil Falls because of the massive mess of people visiting for the weekend. ***Pro tip: DON'T PARK ON A NARROW SHELF ROAD IN A SWITCHBACK TURN!! Some idiot had parked so that they took up about half of the narrow shelf road going down from black bear pass right at switchback, leaving only about ten feet between their jeep and an un-protected 500' drop-off. Thank goodness we were narrow!

Anyways...pulled off for lunch in Telluride then went up Imogene Pass:
