That GS is tied down wrong. possibly that is why the tailgate caved

you only need to canyon strap the front handlebars on any bike
and compress the front suspension a bit

in the back all you do is prevent wheel from moving side/side or bouncing, which
can be done with a simple flat strap that doesn't pull the bike weight down into the tailgate

Since I'm in California I'll just sue Toyota since there wasn't a giant yellow sticker covering the entire tail gate saying "Caution not a trampoline." (Jk.... although they would just get the money I win back when I buy my 4x4 DCLB, so maybe not kidding...

Define "average". :) A sport bike, sure. They are about 6' from the front of the front tire to the rear contact patch. Cruisers are another story, they can be a lot longer.
Harder to securely strap down mounted that way though.

I had my 848 to thunderhill and back, never bent the tailgate but the damn Harley ruined it. No issues with a sportbike sitting on the tailgate and using the bed extender.:bikewheelie:

I am here pondering a Tacoma- and this is one of my concerns.
I know there was a reply a couple pages back from a Frontier owner about it support weight. I also have a Frontier(06) short bed- and its support weight was 250 lbs. Above that- and supposedly the cables will snap. What I have noticed is that the two side mounts (pivot points) into the bed sides are bending down.

I live in Mass, and a couple of years ago- I needed to go to central PA to pick up a garden tractor. It was an 800 pound beast with a cast iron rear axle. I was concerned about lugging it home in a 5 foot bed, but could not find a 6 foot truck to borrow. I also knew the place I was picking up from had a drive on platform to my bed. Since the tractor was a foot too long- the rear tires and cast iron rear end were going to be sitting on the tailboard. I brought 2 pcs of 6 foot 2 by 12's just to distribute the weight along the entire bed- and then strapped it down. I made it home without any issue- but was nervous for the first few miles.

The simple solution was to own a long bed- but the Crew/Long Bed option came in 2007 or 2008, and honestly does not look quite right.

I have the itch to buy a new ride- it may be either the Tacoma or even a Tundra.
    Thx
    Chris

Found that 3 tailgate braces were loose when installing pop and lock. Glue broke loose like some have seen on the hoods. Dealer sent it to a body shop to have them reglued. The body shop reglued all bracing not just the loose ones.

Hey guys, sorry to bump an old thread. I found this thread while trying to figure out what I can and can't load into my truck. Long story short, I need to transport a KTM 1190 Adventure, which is roughly 500 lbs. I'm about 210 lbs myself, so I got a bit paranoid about 700+ lbs on a ramp against my tailgate. I went to my dealer and asked the basic question: what's the load rating? Within 10 minutes I spoke to about 8 employees, with varying degrees of verbal confidence, telling me that all "should be fine". One recommended I Google the answer, which I found particularly disconcerting. In the end, two upper management types stood with me on the tailgate of a 2016 Tacoma (not mine), bounced on it, and reassured me that it'll be fine for loading the bike. Neither wanted to state that resting a tire on the tailgate for transport is a great idea, but they told me not to worry about loading and unloading.

So there you go. My dealer is in general pretty chill, so maybe that's part of it, but I'm going to try it and see how it goes.

IIRC, from my experiences: my Gen 1 had a very thin tailgate on inside, Gen 2 was stronger, but still not as strong as Gen 3.

The Gen 3 is not super strong ... but IIRC, my Frontier had a stronger tailgate (doing this from memory).

Well, it worked, and I don't see any bending or damage

How do you tie that sum'bitch down?

I've got a SB and I'd like to transport my G650x (~350#). Not sure I want to drill my bed with a BedBuddy--which I can't see being all that sturdy anyway.

    Nice 1190r!

Hauled my 430lb track bike to the track and back several times with no issues. I also had the bike on the chock, which moves the rear tire smack dab in the middle of the tail gate.

I had the mobtown reinforcement plate, but took it off since I really don't think I needed it.
