I'd say call Animal Control. Explain this is twice. See what they say. But MP29 is right, it's a difficult decision.

Yeah I agree. We talked to animal control. He is an elected official from a few towns over. He is definitely not a dog person and dose not really know much about the situation. I'm Guna talk to the shelter and see what they think is the right thing to do. Hopefully it will all work out in her best interest. At least for now she has a safe spot till Monday. My chocolate lab really likes her though.

    This backseat hammock is awesome:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MD58MA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's really tough, waterproof rip-stop material. Super easy to install. If I want to secure my dog I clip in one of the rear seat belts behind the hammock and attach a 22 kn rated climbing sling with a carabiner, poke it through the velcro holes in the hammock, and attach it to the back of her harness. She can comfortably walk around the back while fully secured.

Like I said, I might be morally wrong.
Do what you think is right. Original owners definitely have a say in what happens.

Well, thats tough. The important thing is that the dog is safe. However, the dog could be incredibly smart and an amazing escape artist. Who knows about the owner - could be a complete bafoon, or just could be someone who hasn't found a hole in their fence yet.. could be someone like the gardener or pool guy is leaving the gate open causing all of this.
My point is, unless you know the owner is being irresponsible, they should probably get their dog back. I would be devastated if the apartment guy let my dog get out while he was doing work, and someone took him thinking I was the one being abusive/negligent.
That being said- I would contact the owner (however you can, even if you tell the animal control people that the owner has to come pick the dog up from you), tell them your concern and offer to take the dog in. They definitely could be total idiots who do not deserve the dog and its love, and are irresponsible. I wouldn't worry about overstepping your boundaries by talking to them and voicing your concerns because like I said, the most important thing is the dogs safety.. and I think as long as you express that they shouldn't mind.

Thats what I would do.. just my two cents.

Thanks for the response. I completely agree. I'm going to talk to the shelter tomorrow morning when they open and try and dig some more information. They didn't give me a whole lot to go on the first time. They just said her family reclaimed her. The animal control person said it was a young kid. I will certainly give my two cents to the shelter. And if I am giving the opportunity to the owners as well. I'm even willing to help them find a way to contain her. But a lot of it is just they need to be a bit more observant. If it's the house I think she keeps coming from, the first day she went missing I went there twice. All the windows were open lights on and cars in the driveway and no answers. Giving them the benefit of the doubt maybe they were out looking for her but we were at the house next door to that one for an hour and they never came. And same last night. She was gone about an hour when they called me that they had found her again. It's also my understanding that the person that found her last night went there too and they also got no answer, maybe we just have bad timing. But I will do some investigation tomorrow and I will just be sure that the situation I release her to is as safe as it can be. Thanks for all the responses.

that dog looks a little like my son's shorthair 'McNabb' border collie. Seamus is a total loon, and a major escape artist, also has been known to run 20-30 miles just because. he's jumped out a car window going 30MPH just to go chase/herd some cows...

Yes. My neighbor has a border collie and he is always escaping their fence.

My neighbor stopped his Border Collie from escaping under the backyard fence by placing an old broken vacuum cleaner right in her favorite digging spot.

That wouldn't work around Seamus. he's been known to methodically, and completely, shred anything he dislikes when left alone. This includes leashes, seat belts, etc.

Thank you guys for the insight. It definitely opens my eyes a bit that her owner may not a total dub. Seams like it could be a challenge for them to keep her in. Hopefully when I can talk to the shelter tomorrow a bit better picture will be painted. I'm used to a lab. You put a chair in there way they will lay down and give up because they are to lazy to go around or push it out of the way.

I keep hearing a lot of that. So if they are so notorious fo getting out, why don't people keep an eye on them while there outside. My yard is not fenced in and when my lab goes out I'm either with her or I am on the deck watching her. All she wants to do is lay in the grass, but she is like a two year old. She can make bad decisions. She sees a squirrel and she will go. That's why I watch her, so I can intervene. So if you know your dog can get out, shouldn't that give you more of a reason to watch them more closely. My dog has tried to take off once in two years and she made it 20 feet before I could get her to stop because I saw her go. This guys dog has gotten LOST and ended up in a shelter twice in a week. It's just a bit frustrating. Cute pug by the way. Love them they are so funny. The marina I do all my service and storage with got a pug puppy last spring. He is a riot.
