Just completed a short overland style trip. Took a long weekend to visit Tallgrass Prairie Reserve and Fort Scott. I also took some time to visit Pricher which is a ghost town in Oklahoma. The Chat hills are huge and I can't believe that people lived near all of that toxic waste. We then drove Historical Route 66. All of the camping was free and it cost less than $200 for the whole four days. The trip overall was rural and 4wheel drive was preferred but not mandatory if it was dry. We ran into some muddy roads but they were not bad by any means.

First Night at Shawnee Trail Conservation Area

Some Florals from the 2nd afternoon.

Sun rise on the day home.

Moon rise on the second night.

More florals on the third day. We also saw Prairie Chickens on F. Road it was great.

    Chat hills from Pricher, Oklahoma.

Pricher was a mining town that had to get shut down by the EPA because the chat or left over parts from the lead and zinc mining had become toxic and nearly 40 percent of the towns kids had lead poisoning. Here is a great Wikipedia write up. I first saw it on a Netflix show of ghost towns. Really neat place to visit.

You will enjoy that drive. Any specific reason your going to Tulsa? You could make a great loop out of the trip with several free camp sites along the way. I've done that route several times from so cal to Texas and back.
