It's not factory, it's made by ADS. They make most of the firmware for bypass modules for aftermarket remote starts. They do offer some plug and play harnesses for certain applications. I'm just going to wire mine in. I do this for living, so nothing to it for me. I got this as a test product when they first released it. My f159 had a factory remote start so I didn't want to use this

so are there remote starts that will still work with the proxy lock/unlock/start functions? i want remote start but wasn't sure if I would lose any of the smart key features. I sorta assumed companies would be able to still use those features.

No they will retain. But there is a note for sycnoization for the door locks. If your using a 4 button aftermarket remote you need to hardwire the door locks or they won't work if your only using the OEM remote and running the locks through the CAN network. Also there is no takeover for smart key so once you open the door the truck shuts off

do you need to keep the smart key with you still? i was hoping the aftermarket fob could replicate the wireless signal of your smart key.

would be pretty annoying to have it shut off every time, but in Minnesota having it warm up is still probably worth it.

Yes, because once it shuts down the truck will need to see a key signal again.

This is where having the setups that will work from the OEM fob can be handy provided you're okay with the lessened range in order to have just one remote. I'm still researching them.

Drone Mobile and Viper also have solutions/add-ons that enable remote control/monitoring via cellphone like you see on some other brands like GM. With a subscription fee of course.

Any aftermarket remote start add on will shut down. You can still use your OEM remote to start it. (Lock 3x) but there isn't a take over. The truck shuts off. Even the Toyota remote starts shut down. They found a way around it on some of the older push button Toyotas but nothing for the Tacoma yet. Not sure if they will have a future work around or not.

Yes, I'd already understood that to be the case. Sorry if it seemed I was saying otherwise, I was not.

I had a Jeep with factory remote start and it kept on running, but it also had a key ignition, so the column was locked as was gear shift. Nobody could crawl in and drive away.

Perhaps the current versions don't do takeover for lawyer/safety reasons to prevent theft or more particularly prevent injuries/lawsuits. I can imaging restarting a warmed up (or cooled down) truck still beats not having any remote start capability. I'll be looking more closely at this when I get my truck in...
