On 3rd. gen Tacoma .How can there be 16 , 17 , 18 in wheels offered but the gear ratio is the same for all these trucks ?

So , are the tires smaller on the 17 in. wheels and smaller yet on the 18 in. wheels to keep the speedometers right ?

Or , LOL , is a truck with 17 in. wheels just a hair faster than a truck with 16 in. wheels ?

The moral to the story is , I am getting a sr5 with 16 in. wheels , I will than buy a set of Sport wheel that are 17 in. with tires . Will my speedometer be accurate ?

Flame away , I'm old and take it . LOL

It is the outer circumference of the tires between models that stays the same.

Size of rim does not matter, tire size is what matters

The sidewall gets smaller as the rim size gets bigger. The outer diameter doesn't change and that's why the gearing can stay the same.

Not entirely true, 15s won't fit and the bs/offset can come into play as well as hub bore. I actually typed that same comment at first didn't want to provide "bad" information to a novice. As long as he stays with OEM Tacoma, wheels that comment is true.

I didn't know 15s would not fit. Is that because of the front brakes? Also I would have thought all truck came with 265 70. tmyk

Your original question has been answered (the outer diameter remains the same), and some have already pointed out the need to make sure nothing interferes with the geometry of the wheel well and what is in it, but the switching of rim sizes has other ramifications as well. Other than looks, there are slight but real performance and other issues with different rim/tire combinations. Other things being equal (similar rim construction and materials), larger rims are heavier which affects both acceleration and gas mileage (so pay attention to weight when choosing rims). Smaller sidewalls also means that you can't air down the tire as much when you need traction in snow, sand, or mud, and the ride is not as smooth. Some stick with 16 inch for that reason. On the other hand, larger rims with associated smaller sidewalls can provide better handling and, to most people, look better. Another factor to consider is that tire manufacturers sometimes only offer some tire designs or speed/weight ratings in certain sizes, so rims might limit the types of tires available (not common but also not rare).

The extent of these issues depends of course on how big you go, what materials you choose for the new rims, etc. The differences may not make much difference to someone used to the mileage and ride of a truck. For some people looks trump any other minor changes (and they will be minor if you go from 16 to 17 and choose lightweight rims), but you need to be informed. Otherwise why not just by those 19 inch solid steel rims with ultra skinny tires.
