When I fill up on gas, I let the pump run until it clicks off. After it clicks off, I am able to put 2.5 more gallons in the vehicle. That's filling it up until it doesn't drain down into the filler neck any more. I can see gas pooled inside the fill hole. After the pump clicks off though, to fill it the rest of the way I have to start and stop the flow, filling very slowly to let the air come up from the tank.

Is it normal for it to click off so early? Does anyone else do this?

Overfilling that much will cost you a lot of money when your charcoal canister is murdered.

The world isn't under attack, no need to add 2.5 gallons after the pump shuts off.

Oh I'll definitely stop that then. I had no idea it would do that. Are there still 21 gallons in the tank when the pump shuts off?

Not a good idea. The evaporative system has a canister that collects fuel fumes and injects them to be burned by the engine. That system doesn't respond well to liquid fuel. Eventually, you'll through codes and end up with a fairly sizable repair bill.

I destroyed my Charcoal canister and evap pump overfilling and then a few miles later hit a steep trail which then sent fuel into the vent line and straight to the evap system. If you want to see your check eng light and spend $300-$400 on parts alone go for it. I will never do that again.

    21 is total tank capacity.

I normally fill up 18.5-19 gallons from E.

No need to worry about it. Just fill it when you need to and drive.

I just hope I haven't damaged anything already. I feel really dumb about this now.

You'll know if you jacked it up. Eng light will be on.
