I put a compact Smittybilt Defender roof rack on my '04 Tacoma last month. It was pretty easy to install. As you know, we don't have any rails or factory mounting spots on the tops of our first gens so it has to be drilled to attach. The rack I got required drilling eight, 1/2" holes into the sheet metal of the roof. No need to drill all the way through, just far enough to go through the sheet metal (don't need to remove the headliner or do anything from inside the cab).

Place the well nuts into the 8 holes you drilled, mount the rack and attach it to the well nuts using the provided screws. The well nuts expand inside the holes when the screws are tightened and holds the rack in place.

No problem! And yeah they make the same rack in a full size version as well.

Oh I did, haha. It was terrifying drilling that first hole. I fucked one of them up too, fortunately you can't see the carnage from underneath the mounting bracket. Nothing like drilling huge holes into your truck to make you realize how attached to it you really are.

At some point, it would be easier to just build it up from scratch and not have include unnecessary sheet metal that was already taken off..
