I'm really hoping to do this when I get cap in a couple weeks. I have estimated that there is about 28'' from the platform to the ceiling. My dog's shoulders measure about 28'' from the ground. I REALLY hope she'll be about to fit!

EDIT: I REALLY hope she'll be ABLE to fit!

Does anyone know the height from the platform to the ceiling of their standard sized shell?

Evil Monkey - Where did you get this truck tent from? Did you make it? I am in the process of doing something very similar and had the same idea as you with that truck tent to cover the opening of the topper and the open tailgate. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I was hoping to be able to re-purpose an old tent to cover that area.

Great thread. Just made one for my short bed. We have a roof top tent on the camper shell but this is a nice option for stealth camping situations or when we have others with us and need more then one bed set up. We plan on wrapping the plywood in carpet and using a matress topper that we can roll up when not in use.

Black oval bars, SAE clamp on tail gate.. thanks for that tip!, spare tire lock, wheel locks, locking gas cap..

I used 3/4 inch plywood (2 sheets), 2x6 cross boards and indoor/outdoor carpet. It is STURDY!! We have on order an A.R.E. MX series camper shell to use this bed deck with.
I used a pizza box top to make a stencil for the rear cutout for the plywood. The 2015 bed near the tailgate has a few angles you need to contend with. I carpeted the plywood and the 2x6's. Great project. :) An after thought I had was to use Thompson's Water Seal on the wood before I carpeted it, just for extra protection.

I am going to start building mine shortly. the main difference is I am going to put my truck fitted mattress BELOW it and store everything up top and when I am ready to sleep I will just pull the boards out and have the entire cab for room.... At least this is my plan who knows I might end up liking to sleep on the platform.

Used the same concept for my 3rd gen but raised it up a bit. I used 2x8's and 5/8" plywood and some 3 inch foam.image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg I can't carpet for the life of me but you get the idea.

What size is that action packer?
I really like the idea of this super simple platform, but I am using the 42gal action packer for my under tonneau toolbox right now. Would love to keep it in there and work this platform around it. Also, which topper do you have? How's the headroom with it raised higher?

Killer build, I just built a similar platform for my '16 shortbed this weekend. I'm just about to get to carpeting it and I wondered what kind of carpet you used and how you decided to adhere it. I've heard of people stapling or gluing, but not sure what's best. Any thoughts you have would be awesome. Thanks!

I just finished a storage box that has tabs to mount another chunk of plywood for a sleeping platform for use when it is actually needed. 24"x30" compartment at the front of the storage box. diy 3/16" cap clamps welded up this week as well.

I believe it's just an 8 gallon. The topper is a Leer 180. Head room is about 2 feet or so. Enough room to lay down in and move around but sitting up is out of the question unless you're 8. If I need more headroom I just toss my gear in the back seat, remove the wood I used to raise the platform, and run the planks in wheel well gaps.

I kept to the OPs design, except I added 1/2'' carpet padding:
