Manual transmission I take it? When's the last time you changed your fluid? My 2.7 likes to shift at 2500+ rpm. Too low and it can be notchy

    manual it is.
    changed fluid about 5k ago.
i like to shift it around 2250, which has always worked well until maybe 500 miles ago i stated noticing that some gears ( 1st, 3rd and reverse) were getting harder and harder to shift into.

I had similar issue long time ago (at about 150k). Some gears were hard to get into. It turned out to be the a rubber saddle under the shift lever was worn, and broken. Some pieces of rubber interfered with the lever for some gears. My solution was to remove the rubber and replace it with plastic (custom made). Never had problem with gears since.
