Ran the iconic Rubicon trail killing it in just under 13 hours of wheeling. IFS on 33's is defiantly not the ideal setup for this trail but these rigs are built! team work and skilled drivers helped a lot. There was only one broken CV and a leaf spring bolt that rattled out. All trucks made it the the end of the trail on their own power as well at the hundreds of miles on the road back home with no damage other then some drive line vibrations.

This trail is not for the new wheeler or the guy that doesn't want to scratch his truck. body damage can happen and any moment on the trail we had quite a few close calls with body panels.

I really couldn't of asked for a better group for first time IFS trucks everyone there knows their truck and how to drive it making the trip easier on everyone.

If your thinking of tackling the Rubicon with an IFS rig here are some requirements that i would not do the trail with out.

(note) you will have a better chance running it from Loon to Tahoe the other way you will be pulling a lot of cable.

    1. 3" lift with good articulation LT front end really helps.

    2. Rear locker is a must front will get you up and over the harder lines but it's not needed just recommended .

    3. 35" MT tires you could do it on 33's but the guys on 33's were having issues getting over big ledges.

    4. full skids! 1/4" plate steel under the whole truck they will get a workout. 3/16th is just going to bend. Aluminum will pretty much have to be replaced after the trail so I don't recommend it.

    5. Front steel bumper with a winch.

    6. Rear steel high clearance bumper or you will be dragging your ass on everything.

    7. Rock sliders! they are pretty much the most used thing when it comes to armor when wheeling on big granite boulders.

    8. As many spare parts as you can bring help is far away.

Here is a video of our trip enjoy.

Damnit. I fail on the requirements :pout:

    No winch
    No high clearance rear bumper
    Aluminum skid
    Worn 33's

Nice! Thanks again for leading us through it Jerry. This trail is no cake walk and getting into something like this, you have to be prepared.

    Great tips!

    Your spelling/grammar still sucks :cookiemonster:

Nice writeup Jerry! I would also add LCA skids or aftermarket LCA's. Mine are pretty scratched up and I saw MJ hit his skids a few times at least. Also highly recommend shock relocation and 12" shocks in the rear to keep them planted.

And definitely 1/4" skids... My mid 3/16" skid is bent a bit...

Awesome video! Would love to get my truck capable for that kind of crawling one of these days, hopefully soon.

Are any of you guys manual trans? I only ask because I've been getting into trails like this with mine (obviously not as difficult as this one), and trying to maneuver over rocks and steps real slow in a constant start/stop crawl is a workout to say the least.

    Thanks for posting!

Me, @JLee, @MJonaGS32, and @dakotasyota all have manuals. Jerry has a crawlbox though, so he doesn't count.

I believe 4 of the 8 were manual. They did awesome but it does take some practice to feather the clutch/throttle

Edit: I guess Jerry doesn't count so 3 haha

Ultra cool video, thank you for making it, and sharing it. Does anyone run stock locker and A-Trak?

Cool that the stock systems provide enough traction, and are robust enough to survive. Thanks to all you guys, way cool video.

Awesome vid jerry. Definitely needed everything you listed above. I had a blast but if I were to do it again it would be over 3 days. Take my time and have a more relaxing trip. We were hustling through the trail.

Awesome! I like the part when none of y'all winched boulders and filled the hard parts with concrete.
