That statement appears to be from an old Tech Tip (2014):

Correct, I called toyota and verified that the statement is old. I went through a fiasco with my dealer not doing an oil change at 5k so I called HQ.

Also, just to piss everyone off, 5w30(early) and 0w20(late 2nd gen/3rd gen) 2TRs have the same bearing clearances through out the engine. So the whole 0w20 motors have tighter clearances is kinda false in this engine. So tell me.. 5w30 or 0w20? Go.

    I could not find any oil change interval in the owners manual, 1st owners manual I ever saw without that. Online all I could find is this;

What are the oil change intervals using synthetic oil?

    • Only Toyota vehicles in which 0w-20 synthetic oil is required (except for the 2TR-FE and 3UR-FBE Engines*) have been approved for extended oil change intervals of 10,000-miles/12-months. (However, you should continue to check the oil level regularly and top off if needed. That will help your engine get the full benefit of synthetic oil.)

    • In the case of vehicles with 10,000 mile oil change intervals, the 5,000 mile service interval has not been eliminated. The traditional 5,000 mile maintenance procedures (such as tire rotation) will continue to be required, and the fluid levels (such as brake fluid) will need to be checked and adjusted at this time.

    • If the vehicle operation meets the standard criteria for "Special Operating Conditions" such as: driving off-road, on dirt roads, towing a trailer, making repeated short trips under 32˚ F, or extensive idling; the engine oil must be replaced at 5,000 mile intervals, regardless of what type of oil is used.

*The 2TR-FE (4Runner / Tacoma) and the 3UR-FBE (Flex Fuel Tundra / Sequoia) are the exceptions to this new change interval program; these engines have not been approved for the 10,000 mile interval at this time. A 5,000-mile/6-month oil change interval is still required for these vehicles. Also, the Flex Fuel 3UR-FBE requires a 2,500 mile interval when operated on E85.

It does not say when it was published , If there is other PROOF in black and white of oil change intervals , I would like to see it. My 2016 Tacoma with the 2TR-FE has a 5,000 mile or 6 month OCI

My dealer printed the maintenance schedule for the 2016 2TR, i then confirmed the 10k oil change with toyota. As mentioned earlier some of the info published by toyota is old info that they havn't updated. 0w20 has a 10k interval because it's synthetic. Toyotas 0w20 is one of the best in the market. UOAs for toyotas 0w20 show the 10k interval is doable. I personally change it every 8-9k.

Just wow! Look at post #21 for the source of your dribble.

And, while you are at it, look at the booklets that Toyota gave you when you purchased your 2016. One will be called "Toyota 2016 Tacoma Warranty and Maintenance Guide". Look in there, and find:

For someone that will put 30-35k/year on their truck, the 10k interval is great news

Unless the filter's warranty covers engine damage, it isn't worth the button presses it takes to type it out, since they'll just give you a brand new $5 oil filter for your new ship anchor.

I guess they are pushing out the intervals. for me, changing at 5,000 makes me sleep better because at the end, it doesn't cost that much if you do it yourself and makes the truck run smoother with new oil. What brand of motor oil are you guys using on your tacos?

I just got off the phone with Toyota corporate. Though the owners manual says change the oil at 10,000 (pg.38, 2016 Warantee and Maintenance Guide) except special circumstances - their own on-line FAQ says 5000 for ALL conditions for the 2TR-FE. So I asked them to clarify. Sure enough, the manual is wrong, the 2TR-FE has required change at 5000, period. I thought about starting a thread with this, but it's probably here someplace I couldn't find and it's old news. Well, news to me anyway.

Went to the dealership today for the first 5k service. They said no oil change till 10k, if I wanted one it was on me. I told them to change it, and I'd get with Toyota. Before I left the truck they stopped me, apologized, and said yes, oil change needed and its free. I wonder how many before me didn't get a required oil change.

I wouldn't go by the dealership/corporate. Look in the manual again, it depends on the environment the truck is driven in as to the change interval. I trust information given by the team of engineers that were involved with the owner's/warranty manual more than I would corporate idiot/dealership as they may be using outdated information.

I certainly agree with you. I was also told by the dealership the overpriced floormats (which I was privileged to buy with the truck) are supposed to curl clear over by the door. No sh*t, they actually said that.
The saga continued. I picked up the truck and the dealership advised they would cover the oil change since they said they would, but it wasn't necessary, as my 2016 engine is a 2TR, not a 2TR-FE. The FE they advised refers to flex fuel engines, noted by a green fuel cap, and they require 5k changes. Then they said, the hood adhesive IS failing; we've never seen that.

Wow, they are really trying to BS you there.

    FWIW, FE means...
    F: narrow-angle valve DOHC
    E: Electronic Fuel injection

    Whereas 2TR is the "block".

Thanks for confirming that. I'd looked it up on the net and found the same thing, but didn't know if it was right.
    The saga continues:
When they told me they were covering the oil change as Toyota corporate won't, I, likely stupidly, said that wasn't fair as it was corporate that told me it had to be changed, and I paid for it myself. I then called corporate, and they said no, it didn't have to be changed. I asked them to look up my last contact which contradicted that. They did, then said to email them the receipts. I did.
Then, I got an email saying it was the dealerships problem, would I like them to contact them for me. I emailed back no, and explained again why. They sent me back the exact same email - apparently a form letter.
Then later, I got another email, saying I was told correctly by them of the 5000 oil change, and said see my owners manual, attaching a copy. I have looked and looked through that manual, and for normal use all I find is 10,000 mile change. They finished by saying someone will call today. I'll keep you posted.
