It seems to vary between dealers. Mine had a $2500 deposit, nonrefundable, so not an ideal thing, but also not an issue for me in this instance. I've worked with this dealer before and I knew what I wanted. I had no realistic expectation of finding my config suddenly materialize out of thin air nor of my changing my mind.

Paperwork was a sales sheet filled in with model, options, pricing, etc. it showed the bottom line out the door we'd negotiated to and it showed my deposit amount.

I have a high volume dealer that I bought from. The prices they list are already competitive with the better deals in that thread we have. That's before you start to negotiate on trade-in values etc.

I got a pretty solid deal.

Make sure you're using correct invoice prices, not all online info is up to date. Furthermore, it can sometimes be a little different depending on your region it seems.

You can try to negotiate whatever you want, though the tint may be difficult if it's been applied already and doc fees tend to be written in stone. Still, they may be able to offset with a discount elsewhere or higher trade in value if they're willing to do so to make the deal.

At the end of the day what matters is your out the door price. How they allocate that to different line items just doesn't matter.

Don't get so caught up in the excitement that you stop thinking straight!

If you don't want to pay the tint fee then tell then you won't pay it because you don't want their tint. You "will have to pay to have it removed". Ask to remove the doc fee and you'll buy the truck today.

You might be able to negotiate the tint fee, but the doc fee may be firm. Check your state's laws on which fees are required and which are optional (and you can refuse). For example, Texas dealers like to pass on an "inventory tax" as a way to get the buyer to pay what they owe the state, but by state law the buyer doesn't have to pay that. I've successfully argued that off pretty easily on my last 4 vehicle purchases.

    Silence. Silence is golden.

I had the price I wanted and trade in price I wanted. Sat there in silence for 12-15 minutes while the sales guy and manager just kept talking to me. Telling me this, that, asking me was it good enough. In that 12-15 minutes I got $500 more on trade and $6XX less on truck.

It's unreal how far silence gets you.

    ETA:

But to add, you're asking for a specific trim and accessories. They have you there. I was open to anything 4x4. Once you burn up enough of their time (2-3 hours minimum), they have to make a sale. Contacting with a price doesn't take any of their time so they just say no. Go haggle. Same "That's not good enough" many times. Then at the end go silent.

So it turns out the reason my invoice price and his invoice price is different is because of the $622 TDA fee. Where do I go from here? The TDA fee and the tint fee are the only things keeping this deal from getting done. I've read that TDA is supposedly nonnegotiable, however a select few have said they've been able to get rid of it from a 2015 thread regarding the matter. Anyone care to share their recent experience with the TDA fee?

Personally I consider this all a bit like sausage making. There's a lot of stuff that goes into it that you probably don't want to think about. All that really matters is whether you like the results.

Stuff like doc frees and advertising fees and so forth are just ingredients to the final deal. Sure maybe you can negotiate them off or down, or maybe you can't. If the dealer's already discounted the truck as much as they're willing to then they won't budge, otherwise they might.

It's difficult to rely on others experiences since every deal is different. Sure, Fred Flintsone might have gotten them to remove the TDA at Bedrock Toyota, but we don't know if he got screwed on his trade in or financed at an inflated rate. Or maybe his dealer was one sale shy of achieving a monthly or quarterly goal and was willing to do that just the one time.
So.. my advice is to consider the sausage rather than the ingredients. Is this currently the best deal you've been able to make in your region? Have you communicated with every dealer within a three hour drive and gotten their best price? Is anyone else lower? (sorry if you've posted these details, I've not memoriezed everyone's situation)

If this dealer is the lowest of all the other prices you've been able to obtain, then go in and talk to them. Don't draw a line in the sand around those specific line items. Present it as you have a problem you hope they can solve. State that you'll buy the truck today if they can meet your out the door total of $xx,xxx. Give them an opportunity to come up with a solution.

We did something similar when I helped my daughter buy her car. We didn't have the luxury of time though, so the "process" was abbreviated. We ended up at the table negotiating and were close but not quite. I approached it the same way. Their solution was to kick up the trade in value of her nearly junker trade enough to cover the difference.

If they won't agree to it immediately, shake their hands amicably and walk out. See if they call you the next day with a change of tune. Some say you've left money on the table if you've not walked out at least once. :)

So originally I ordered mine for a 2016 in May 2016 with the Costco program which was 150 over invoice . They told me my car was in allocation around August and is estimated around September to arrive . I asked for a specific build but didn't get my tonneu cover and Trd skid plate . Tonneu cover I understood it didn't come with my color. Ended up with a 2017 and they said Costco has no 2017 pricing in their program but since they promised me Costco for a 2016 they'll honor it for the 2017. Which still was 150 over invoice. Try finding a dealership in LA. Then order over the phone which I did and fly out when it's ready

    Hope that helps
