Wiring issue...I think

Hello all, about three months ago I installed the

$160 Rexing V1P 4K Car Dash Cam 2.4" LCD 2160p Front + 1080p Rear Wi-Fi 170° Wide Angle Dual Channel with Rear Cam, G-Sensor, WDR, Loop Recording Mobile App Supercapacitor

Rexing V1P dash cam. I have it set up to record 24/7.


I used this hard-wire install kit to supply power.


I wired it directly from the battery with an inline fuse. Everything was working great until this week. When my truck has been sitting for an extended period of time, let's say a few hours, and I start my truck the camera turns off. I need to know if this is a product issue or if it could be bad wiring. Thank you for any help.

 

Being hard-wired to the battery, is the camera always on? I have a similar camera and power supply, but I have it connected to a fuse/circuit that turns on with the accessories. It sounds like there may be a power dip when you start the truck? Might check your battery and alternator.

 

Yes it is always on. I'll have those checked out. Any reason why this would randomly start happening?

 

My theory, is that your battery may be going bad because the camera is slowly draining the battery when the truck is not running. In my experience, batteries often go bad slowly, which could explain why it took a while for the symptom to start happening. If the camera is the only accessory affected, then it may be a bad connection, or the camera may just be more finicky about the amount of power it gets. Again, it is just a theory, but that is the next thing I would check after checking the connections.

So my battery and alternator are good. I'm thinking of checking power at the power cable end while cranking to see if it is losing power there.

 

If you have the cigarette lighter adapter for the camera, you can test the camera with that. If it works with that, then the unit is good. At that point, it may be the ground or another connection, or the power supply may be bad. You could also test the USB power with another USB powered device, if you have one. Good luck.

So I was told that it could be because of the drop in voltage of the battery when starting. Do you think that could be a possibility? And if so would an inline capacitor help solve that problem?

 

Bump for help on this. I think an inline capacitor may work but I'm not very good at figuring out the specifics of doing that.

 

Well, I was hoping that someone who knew what they were talking about would chime in. I suppose a capacitor would work, but I wouldn't know what size or capacity it would need to be. If the camera just turns off and then back on, then it might not be such a bad thing. From what I have found on the internets, a normally battery should put out at least 10v at around 700-800 amps while cranking, or it is bad. If the camera manufacture indicates that this is not normal behavior for their camera, then I would turn back to the battery or alternator. How was the battery and alternator tested?

 

Same here lol. I tested them with a multi meter. I was getting 14.26v at the battery while running and it went down to 11.21v while cranking. Then I disconnected the battery and tested that alone and was getting 12.20v.
