May end up trying that or something similar..... Other options seem complicated and expensive..... Although a locker would be really nice I think

to find a locked 4.56 rear your only real hope is finding one an an offroad forum for sale. Like the classifieds here but pirate4x4 has the best classifieds section. A non- elocker (tacoma 8.4) axle with an ARB would be ideal to find. You can always weld the holes and keep looking to the right axle shows up.

elocker 4.56 is the rarest of the rare.

better off finding another 8.4" complete and swapping third members.

theres probably no chance you live anywhere close to me but i have a spare axle housing laying around id pretty much just give away.

I wouldn't put the locker dream out yet... your going to have to replace the axle eventually, bet your 3rd is looking pretty haggard too and theres no way to weld that. so I would follow the advice here and seal it up the best you can and then hunt hunt hunt. Don't give up, theres plenty of axles out there!!

ECGS does a great job with rebuilding 3rd members and installing ARB lockers, and they're in the Carolina's I believe. So if you do end up finding a non locked (def going to be cheaper and less in demand than e locker) axle, thats money you could put towards a rebuilt 3rd with ARB and any gears you want.... food for thought, and none of it will be cheap so might as well save up and get what you want!

Heres what my 3rd member looked like, one of the reasons I said fuck it on welding the pin hole leaks... this thing was a time bomb!

ive literally seen axles that have been on the beach in sea spray for probably 30 years that look better than that. is that really layers of rust?

Replacing the third won't fix the OP's original problem, corroded and leaky housing.
I assume the third member is OK, except for being open.

Assuming you found a housing, you'd have to install a new third, or install a locker into your existing third.
ARB locker plus ARB air compressor will cost around $1200 not including tax, shipping and installation.

Nobody said that it would :notsure:

I would assume that if the axle housing is rusted enough to leak, the 3rd member which is a 3-4 inches north wouldn't be in much better shape, which was the case with mine.

    Oh Boy...

Thank you all for your interest in my problem. Giving me lots to think about.

Should I start a dead pool on how long the current unit goes before it craps out?.... I drive this truck 20k + miles/ year.

    (No ABS)

Well if you do want to get a whole new rear axle I personally don't have one available right now. But they have one with only 91K at NE Auto & Truck Recyclers for $550. Their number is 1-800-553-3080 and they are only in Winchendon MA, so they are very close to you. GL

Just FYI, cause I remember it being a question I had... A used axle with ABS will be totally fine, you literally cut the ABS sensor wires off and your good.

That was a great tip off, @mach1man001 , very good price for 91K! I'm embarrassed I've haven't heard of these guys :anonymous:
