Mammoth is gonna be nice this time of year. I was up there for labor day and a few weeks before that. Awesome times, love it up there.

Even with conventional, i wouldnt worry about it. Run it, get another 800-900 miles out of it and change it when you get home. The long constant driving is easy on the oil compared to short trips in the city.

That's a good point. Maybe I will just check it to make sure it looks ok before I go and then change it once I get home. Thanks.

This!! You can just drain the oil on a fire road, toss the filter in the bushes, fill'er up and go! Don't forget to put the drain plug back in though. :D

Seriously, waiting til you get back will be fine. Your truck won't blow up provided you always have done proper maintenance.

This is why I would not change it. I'd forget to put the drain plug gasket on in my haste and have to deal with an oil leak the whole trip. If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all.

    Same as everybody else...
High quality synthetic oil like M1 or QSUD and a OEM filter cost less than 30 bucks and takes about 40 minutes start to finish. I'd change it now and it gives you the chance to crawl under your truck and do a inspection prior to the trip.

Don't change for another 5k miles..... wasting money on short oil change intervals. Use the saved money on your trip

Diesel mechanic in the Army was I. Spent my last 3 years in running the AOAP "Army Oil Analysis Program" for our Engineering Company. Most modern oils are designed to run way past the 5000 mile mark. The only reason for changing the oil at 5000 unless the oil is contaminated is due to blow by from the rings causing the oil to become "dirty" with hydrocarbons. That's the main reason for the 5000 mile oil change not from loss of lubrication properties.
Check it before you leave....Check it during your trip and change it when you get home.

If using conventional oil, 5k is kind of a lot. I would change it before the trip.

Think about it, your oil is on the end of it's life. Going on a long road trip that will consist of high elevations and being ran for long periods of time will deteriorate the oil even further.

Just wasting oil if you change it now. A little over won't hurt it at all.
