My friend just built a house with TJIs that allowed for the whole middle web to be removed for a furnace plenum

As much as some of us are reluctant to jump on board...me included composite materials are really good and they are green too. Some are in there infancy but others we use everyday and use to knock them.

I have no issue with the newer materials but the costs make no sense , why is it 3 times more expensive for LVL or TJI's or PSL made out of strips of small , fast growing trees and beaver puke than a big piece of lumber made from huge , ancient trees

I would love to see the spec on that....given time to think about it it prob supported on 4 sides by lam beam material.

my whole lumber package for a 2000sf house with TJI and trusses cost 22,000...doesn't seem unreasonable to me my geothermal cost me 40,000 before rebates.

Plywood top and bottom chords , whole middle web in a certain section is left out for the plenum

Just saying the cost comparison makes no sense

No , I mean it shouldn't be more expensive it should be cheaper than dimensional lumber . PSL 2x6 is like 7 or 8 times more expensive than dimensional 2x6 and its made out of tiny little strips of wood glued together from fast growing sustainable trees

I think you're paying for engineering and "true cost" as in paying machines to laminate "beaver puke" and adhesives and the patents and structural load testings. Trees are taken for granted in my book. $.02

Finished the woodshed (enough; the trim, ramp, and door can wait until after it's full, lol) and started filling it yesterday, until it was time to knock off to watch some football.
    Ugly, but functional

No ramp yet, so I used the tractor instead of the wheelbarrow. Carries more in a trip, too.

Clear roof, that stuff is going to be seasoned nicely!

    That's the plan!
This stuff spent last winter stacked 4-foot, then I cut it to stove length this spring and it's all been split and under a tarp for about a month while I built the shed, so it's pretty well seasoned already. But, the clear roof should definitely help it finish up in a hurry. And any green that gets put in there in the future should season fast, too.

Biggest thing I would do differently on that setup would be to use the adjustable height pier blocks so that as they settle differently over time, they can be raised up to relevel as needed. Nice look though

Well, I dug down below the frost line and refilled the holes with crushed rock, tamping it every 6 inches or so as I went. So they should be pretty stable. But worst case, it's just a wood shed. If it's not 100% level after a year or 3 I won't really care too much, haha!

Worst case, put a jack under one corner to lift it, then put a new piece of 4x4 in.

True. I had to do that with my garden shed, because the previous owner of the house just set it on blocks on the ground without any prep work. :der:

That clear corrugated roofing is a great idea. Wish I could use it on projects. Our desert sun turns that stuff opaque and brittle in a year or two.
