At first i was against an extended warranty but after seeing everyone and their problems i am rethinking it. Has anyone went back and purchased a toyota extended warranty out of pocket? If so how much was it and where from?

Other people may look at it differently, but I'd view buying an additional warranty our of fear as rewarding Toyota for not doing a good job designing or building the vehicle.

Personally, I think the standard warranty is enough to get the bugs worked out on their dime and I don't really worry about the vehicle not lasting very long. I'm sure it'll go as long as any of my other Toyotas without having major problems so I didn't buy the extended warranty.

If it were a Chrysler-Fiat, Volkswagen, or Mini, I'd definitely buy the warranty. Toyota not so much.

60,000 mile drive train, I wouldn't worry about extended warranty you'll never use

I bought the 8 year 125,000 mile platinum warranty from Toyota. You must understand what you're buying. It starts the day the truck was built, not 8 years after the factory warranty or not even from the day you purchased the truck or the warranty. It was important to me as the platinum warranty covers the electronics and labor, towing and rental car. You can save a lot on the warranty cost if you put it in your contract negotiations when you bought your truck prior to sale before you go to the closer. I could do little on the cost of the truck when I bought my truck, but was able to make up allot of the extended warranty. I keep my cars and trucks a very long time. My first car I have kept it for 39 years. The rest have been kept between 11 and 16 years all bought used and this is my first new truck so I am in this thing for the long haul. Most people trade in between 4 and 5 years, for them maybe an extended warranty isnt advised. It's all up to you and your personal situation. For me only the longest term Toyota Platinum warranty is the one to buy. Read the brochure what it does and doesn't cover and make an educated decision on what you're buying. Prices for the warranties are all over the place. Shop around.

I ended up opting to get it at time of purchase. Finance guy told me $1400 for the Platinum for 75,000/8 years. I drive less than 10k a year. Last year was 6,500 miles... I still have time to return it and just pay a $50 processing fee, still not sure what to do. I have until mid-October

Insurance is statistically in favor of Toyota (or whatever particular company is attempting to sell you this product). They've got the facts. They know exactly what has gone wrong on all three generations of Toyota. Every vehicle.

They wouldn't attempt to sell each new owner insurance if the stats showed it would fall in your favor. It's like blackjack in Vegas.

I've had all three generations and I didn't buy extended coverage for my new one.

I got 10 years 100,000 miles for $1600 and am glad I did. I average 10,000 miles a year so it works out well for me - it's a gamble but I'm a gamblin' man.

Well, the most recently retired Toyotas in our family were each 14-15 years old and had 240,000 and 170,000 miles respectively.

That said, my dealer includes lifetime powertrain (Fidelity) on all new vehicles so I'm not real inclined to buy anything extra since I have coverage of a lot of the majors, including fuel and water pumps. I politely declined the proffered extended bumper-to-bumper coverage. I'll give it a couple years and see how things are going, then look at non-SouthEast Toyota warranty costs and decide if it's something I want. Tennessee isn't that far away to go buy a true Toyota warranty.
