I was just wondering how hard it is to add an OEM trailer hitch if your truck didnt come with one. I have a 2005 DCLB, do I need to buy any parts or a new bumper if I pickup a used OEM trailer hitch from another 2nd generation tacoma?

Thanks, I thought I had somewhere that there are differences between how the rear bumper attaches to a tacoma with a hitch and one without the hitch.

If you want to add a class III hitch that video applies. Mildly terrifying watching them electrical tape a bracket spacer like that.

If you want an OEM class IV hitch that gives you the max tow-rating for the Tacoma then you'll need to find the OEM $900 part and then it's a very simple bolt on. The bumper mounts to the hitch assembly and then the whole thing bolts to the truck. I found one on Amazon with Prime shipping. It showed up at my house exactly pictured below. No box or protection. This gives you a good idea of how it's much beefier than a normal class III hitch.

I got an OEM Toyota hitch off Craigslist (just like the one pictured above) for my 2015 for $120. I replaced a cheap Uhaul hitch that I got when I bought it. The install is easy. It just bolts right up to pre-existing holes. I did the install in about an hour all by myself. You will need the two extra reinforcement brackets (L shaped, mount to the inside of the the frame rails and then attach to the hitch), in case yours does not come with it.

Is the hitch welded or bolted to the bumber enforcement assembly? If you have the assembly for the bumper will it bolt on to the hitch?

It is bolted. Yes if you have the bumper asssembly use can use the existing reinforcement piece with the main hitch. Thats what I did.

I have a four cylinder truck so I purchased a Kurt hitch off the web,

I didn't realize the OEM hitch had the bumper bolted to it then the whole assembly bolted to the frame.
Appreciate the heads up down the road. I'm hoping to be in a DC V6 soon.

Wow that list you linked it costly, part of me can't believe Toyota only charges less than 700 as an option to have the extra parts all inclusive for the Class IV hitch. I am thankful they seem to do it right though with everything and not skimping on some stuff.

I have the tow package so my truck has a factory receiver hitch, after getting my frame replaced I decided to replace the hitch as its a rusty mess, ordered the Curt receiver, did not realize the rear bumper brackets were integrated into the factory receiver hitch until after I had everything apart, ordered the brackets still need to install the new hitch though.

I don't think the receiver itself is available, the PN includes those parts.

I bought a used one for $100 and it came with a hitch and brand new ball.

Lot of them for sale, I'm sure you can find a good deal.
