Moving into a new house and though my bedroom is similar in size to my old bedroom due to the layout I am ditching my bed and am going to make a "floating" bed.
I want to give the illusion of a floating bed without tearing out Sheetrock, I have a design what would look very good and work well but required sheetrock removal and reinstalation.

The bed will be installed in a corner so a full side and the end will be supported by the walls, i plan on attaching 2x6's to the studs and the bed frame I will make will sit on top of that and they will be attached to each other for easy removal.
Since both a side and one end will be supported with this method I only have to worry about the corner at the center of the room.

I would like a fully "floating" image so I need to figure out how to support the corner via bracing and other supports underneath the mattress.
I thought about a cantilever arm attached to the wal going out to the corner but I don't believe it would be strong enough with the 2x4 studs in the wall.

The only 2 things I need from this design are:
    1. The ability to hold appx. 750 lbs (2 adults, 1 child, weight of mattress and box spring)
    2. The "floating look.

    Here are 2 quick sketches.
In this sketch the walls that the bed will be attached to are the 74 5/8" and 121", with the headboard at the 121" wall and the side along the 74" wall.
    image.jpg
And here is a 1:10 sketch, the left wall is 74 5/8" and the top wall is shown as only 60" (the width of the mattress)

    1. How high up is this thing going to be?
    2. You can attach a 2X6 cleat running it around the wall to support the sides attached to the wall.
    3. You still need a post to support the end that is in the middle of the room.
    4. The base needs to be strong enough to support the weight of you(s) and the mattress while having a single point support on the 'free' corner.
    5. Hanging the free end off of the ceiling isn't advisable unless there is strong structure to support that weight. 2X6 ceiling joists wont cut it.
    6. How about a day bed or Murphy type if you really need more room?
    7. If your more than say 3' in the air, I'd suggest some form of a side to keep you from falling out. A 4' fall (or higher) on your head can hurt too.
    8. Need a ladder if it's up in the air. Where's that going?
    9. How about a bed that has storage under the mattress (drawers, etc) and get rid of a bureau?

I don't have a bureau, and do to the room having 2 closets I am going to put some drawers in one and make that essentially a bureau.

The rest of the questions were answered in the quote.

Having a multi-person bed against a wall would suck.

Yep, luckily it's just myself and occasionally a small child, but the child is starting to grow out of the "I need somebody to lie down with me so I can nap" stage.

That is one of the best descriptions of my tinkering that I've ever heard.

I guess I don't understand what this accomplishes over having a measly little 4x4 post at all 4 corners of the bed. Imagine how cheap and easy it would be.

It looks modern and unique, and cheap and easy isn't what I wanted to do on this project.

What is the Floor like ??

one center support in the middle

    Plate 24" X 48" 1/4" or 3/16 with a 6" black pipe welded in the center

Square or rectangle tubing what ever one can source

If your worried about weight Aluminum

The Top can be a simple frame tied into the 6" pipe

You can go as high as you want

    I don`t do wood ever !!

Got the 2x6's on the wall, if I can get the tabs drilled then the frame will be installed today.

It's mounted, good and solid everywhere but the corner, maybe 1/8" of sag with ~300 lbs on just the corner.
Probably gonna end up bracing just to make sure it's good.

Got it pretty much finished up.
Added one support to the floor and I know the bed will hold anything I put on it.
It's very tall, about 4" taller than I had originally intended and I may end up taking the frame off and dropping the wall boards down at least 2" if not 4".
