Comatized99 thanks for the info. That was pretty easy and straight forward even for myself to understand.

I think I'm going to go with the elocker after all. My buddy said it wouldn't be a bad idea, he can set it up and if anything breaks then I have a spare axle I can use. Just buy the axle, new nitro 529s, and the lowrange harness.

Is there anything else I will need such as bearings, seals or gaskets or anything like that? Just to make sure so I can order and have it all together.

The winch should be on tomorrow, hopefully we can get it done in a day.

I will end up throwing one of those tru tracs in the front as well, but I want the rear done first.

    Thanks for the help guys.

Does anyone here know just how difficult it would be to put the elocker in my 8.4"??

Assuming a guy has the fab skills and everything else anyway that is, what all is involved?

Do you have any recommendations on a good kit or brand for the seals and bearings?

I usually order most if not all those type parts from my local toyota dealership, spendy but genuine toyota parts all the same. Just wondering if there was a cheaper source or alternative brand that still are very reliable. I know nothing about seals and bearings.

It might not be possible to swap into your 8.4". Sorry, I might have steered you wrong earlier, I was looking at some pirate4X4 shit and got all confused. Typical TW bullshit going off...apologies, disregard my slop. I'm :drunk:

    Wow, my head is spinning...

Gears for the 8.4 housing will not work in the TRD elocker diff. I have read the ring gear mounting bolt locations are not the same.

All Tacomas that came with the 8.0 elocker setup also came with ABS axles that have a tone ring on the axle and a sensor port on the axle tubes. However, that does not mean that they all came equipped with ABS. Weird huh! Mine is an '02 TRD without ABS ( :woot: ) but the axle is all setup for ABS just the same.

Any time you regear, you also need a master install kit with includes new bearing, seals, a crush sleeve. IIRC, that'll run you ~200$. The ring and pinion gear set makers (Yukon, Nitro, etc.) also sell the install kits.

I, myself prefer e-lockers over all else. That's my personal preference. I have not seen one in person fail. I have read plenty of times people talking about the motor having issues in salty areas, or somehow get a lot of moisture in them, but I have not experienced it. Also, I have heard of people breaking/stripping the splines on the shafts. However, for every person experiencing issues, how many are out their not having issues? We won't ever know because they don't post on sites like this. Everything is going to have pro's and cons. You have to look at your situation, and what you want, then make a decision.

I don't know your friend, but I would not let just anyone set a 3rd up for me, especially in something I drove on the highway. ECGS is an awesome company. I would say that the bearings are probably still good, but for the cost, I would replace them any and every time I changed gears. If the axle seals are leaking, change them, if not.. I would not. RTV around the 3rd as you install it in the housing.. make sure the mating surfaces are Clean.

Be extra careful when/if you get an e-locker and remove the motor. The end the gear is on fits very snug in the 3rd and you can break it prying too hard.
